Command-T doesn't really open many files itself, but you probably had a bunch of stuff going on in your system at the time.
OS X has a very low limit for open file descriptors (256, I believe). Other OS's typically have limits in the thousands or even tens of thousands. You can actually up the limit, even on OS X, to as much as a million pretty safely. Here's how you could up it by an order of magnitude:
$ sudo sysctl -w kern.maxfiles=2048
$ sudo sysctl -w kern.maxfilesperproc=2048
Or put this in /etc/sysctl.conf
to have this persist across reboots:
kern.maxfiles=2048
kern.maxfilesperproc=2048
from command-t.
