Yes, FINGERPRINT_REDUCTION is a trade off between space and potential collisions. The algorithm works by aligning hashes however, so most collisions aren't too harmful if they are relatively few in number.

It seems you are suggesting a drop from 80 bits of entropy (current) to 24 (or is it 16?). This would also increase collisions. Unless I'm misunderstanding you.

Could you clarify "by default you use 16 bits"?

There's no reason to think comparing longs is any faster than strings - MySQL makes an index. If you have empirical testing that suggests otherwise though, I'd be happy to believe you.
