I see where you're coming from with the overlap between the two icons. However, there's a lot of important functionality behind the Windows battery icon (power modes, battery estimates, etc). Without being able to fully replicate that functionality, I wouldn't want to replace the battery icon (even optionally). It could become confusing to find the correct "battery" menu to manage those additional features.
If someone wants to open a pull request with this feature, I'd be happy to include it as an optional feature. I don't see enough value in just the icon to implement it myself.
I'll leave this issue open for a little while for further discussion.
