I don't really have the time to go into the details, but echo and print both compile down to the same opcode in most cases. The choice to use echo vs print has perhaps less than a 0.01% impact on your application's speed. Print was chosen do to so many other languages also using it.

Total time echo: 314 µs
Total time print: 315 µs

Less known fact, print is also a function - not just a language construct.
