Hmm, the image itself is correct, though (dumptga fnt_d16x16
in the debug console, written to the same place screenshots are dumped to).
So it's to do with the coordinates for the individual glyphs, somehow. Maybe we're misinterpreting something, or there's an extra field that modifies them?

(It's a TextureFont, and the coordinates are read out of a TXI file (which in KotOR can be directly embedded into the TPC and is for this font)).

I had already investigated that issue, and it seems, that this specific font is somehow broken. You can replace it by calling setFont("fnt_d16x16b") on the specific widgets. fnt_d16x16b is exactly the same font as fnt_d16x16. The same issue appeared in the Character generation name menu.

Okay, yeah, the font is just broken.
I dumped fnt_d16x16.tpc, renamed fnt_d16x16b.tpc, put it into the override folder and ran the original game in Wine. That's how it looks:
Closing this issue, as it's a problem with the original data files.
