I also think, that one can improve the swipe gesture. And you almost have to swipe from the outer top margin down, but then Android shows the top bar, which is hidden in full screen mode.

I've actually had a couple of times where the camera was at a bit of an angle, and I went to swipe to the side to see the next photo, just as the orientation changed, and it registered as a vertical swipe, wiping my photo.

Actually, deleting shouldn't ever be a swipe, it's too easy to do such a dangerous action. It's like a gun without a trigger safety. A button with a confirm dialog (or undo) should be the only way.

I don't mind having it be a swipe, as long as there is a visible "Undo delete" displayed onscreen for more than a couple of seconds afterwards. It does need to be able to undo more than once though, for those times where people flick a couple of photos to delete quickly.

In fact, I'd suggest that this is actually a better UX as it doesn't block the user from continuing if they did mean to delete the image, yet it explains what just happened and makes it easy to reverse with a tap if it was an accident.

I do agree with the general principal though of making it less likely that someone does something irreversible without even realizing with just a single, simple quick gesture.
