You'd get the same response with more recent versions.
"ok":true
means that there were no main failures.
What you have is shard failures.
One request (be it search or index) can fail at some central processing, or it can be processed on every shard.
Any shard could potentially raise errors without influencing the success of the processing on other shards.
Hence ES returns the success of the overall request, but gives you the list of each shard failures.
That's the general philosophy of ES, and @martijnvg complied to it.
Note that you can see in each and every unit test in the ES codebase the following check when no errors are expected: assertThat(response.getFailedShards(), equalTo(0));
