I can work around this issue a bit by using the browser's zoom feature, but that also increases the size of the controls which is not really what I want.

Codes updated with support of custom slide size and scaling constraints. To specify slide size, add options like:

#+OPTIONS: width:1200 height:800

To specify margin and maximum/minimum scaling factor, use options like below:

#+REVEAL_MARGIN: 0.2
#+REVEAL_MIN_SCALE: 0.5
#+REVEAL_MAX_SCALE: 1.5

Great, thank you. For that actual presentation, I've used some extra CSS using #+REVEAL_EXTRA_CSS: which also worked fine.
