What is the preferred workaround?

Is it acceptable if it logs warn/error to syslog, then continues as if nothing happened. Meaning in A=>B=>C change between A=>B is lost, only A=>C will be committed.
Where B == grit timeout and C == grit works again?

What kind of latency for on-disk I/O are we talking about? I.e. could we just increase the the timeout? Or is this networked disk and I/O might be on occasion pretty much permanently unavailable?

I think a warning, as the precedent is there to warn about ssh/telnet timeouts but not crash.

What is the current timeout? Probably in the grit code itself I assume.
An increase in the timeout would be good, that's what %iowait is good for, right? :)

I think timeout is 10s per default. Expect fix before monday.
