take a look here
If you want to update document with object as a value - try to remove $set operator.
This operator intended to make point changes by fully qualified string path like this:
{ $set: { name: 'test', 'other_image_ids.0.name': 'imagename' } }

Also note:
this behavior wasn't caused by mongoose-slug-updater,
you can try to remove plugin in your code and you will get the same issue.

I'm using this query before and works fine. I tried removing slug and no error thrown. I'll try to dig around. Thanks.
