There have been discussions about working around this by displaying prompts in Zotero, not Word. However, we won't be able to display the "Open Zotero first to use the plugin" dialog in Zotero for obvious reasons, so the solution will have to be more inventive. We might be able to leverage AppleScript for prompts in OSX.

I attempted putting the MsgBox call in a VBA Macro and running that with the Java extension, but got the same result. This is truly a magical bug.
