Google Maps API Costs Money

Google Map API costs money, and it would be nice to have free options to query messy street addresses including corner addresses and addresses including "block of".

Making sense of "census block numbers"

When using tigris, I was confused about getting block codes like 100030028002000.

The below diagram at https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/geography/guidance/geo-identifiers.html helped me to clear this issue:

Lacking geocodes for many incidents

As I mentioned in #3 , there are many data points without census geocodes (1474/2804).

Potential fixes:

• use zip code packages such as rusps as mentioned in this post
• use ggmap:: via google API
• use the Python package, uszipcode

Google Map API miscodes some addresses

I noticed a couple of instances where Google Maps API are not coding addresses to correct longitudes and latitudes

tigris fails with 400 bad request error

Tigris fails with 400 bad request error, when querying ~3k rows (10 rows are fine).

Tried using insistently() but with no luck

Error: Problem with `mutate()` column `census_block`.
