waldbasketbag's Issues

Loved this pattern! Made a few modifications

I really enjoyed making this bag, thank you for publishing! I'm really happy with the materials I picked, all from Rockywoods (except the pellon)

  • Inner structure: Pellon 1/8inch sew-in foam for the body
  • Pink body: Cordura 1000D for the outer basket bag
  • Liner and collar: Challenge Recycled Bag Cloth (RBC) - Coated 400D Fabric w/ Eco Friendly C0 DWR
  • Nexus GTSR Buckles
  • 1 Inch Grosgrain Ribbon, Mil-Spec Style 5038

Modifications

The main thing I wanted to clean up was the look of the enclosure. I didn't love how the fabric spiraled around the webbing near the buckle and ran over the side of the basket. I don't expect to overload this thing, so I sacrificed just a bit of the top end capacity to have it fold like a paper bag at the top.

  • I left the right and left side un-stitched
  • On the left and right, where there's 9 inches of collar at the top, I only gave 7.5 of webbing so that the bag would close properly when almost empty.
  • In order to encourage the bag to do the paper-bag fold, I sewed some pinch seams on all 4 edges. I looked at a lot of basket bags and saw this on the wizard works alekazam.

long dimension for collar pieces is wrong in PDF

cooked one of these up in the past week as my first sewing project, thank you for doing all the work of measuring and writing out the process!!

I have not checked the DXF, but the long dimension for the 2x collar pieces seems off. I modified to 2'-0 1/4" and still had a slight bit of slack (This is with 1/8" foam and a 3/8" seam allowance)

The basket section should have a closed perimeter dimension of (1'-2" * 2) + ( 9" * 2 ) = 3'-10" (46") when finished with a 3/8" seam allowance.

However, the current dimensions for the collars read 2'-2.75", which results in a "tube" perimeter dimension of 4'-4" (52") with a 3/8" seam. This leaves 6 inches of slack in the tube that must be folded in.

As a novice and not knowing how much slack I needed to provide, I modified the collar long dimension to 2'-0 1/4" resulting in a closed tube perimeter of 47". Even this additional inch had to be folded in around the corners, and I believe I could've used less material.

completed bag attached! I love it!

Good job!

This isn't a real issue, it's just my way of saying thanks for this pattern. I messed around with the straps and maybe made some bad choices, but we'll see!

Good job on the pattern and thanks for sharing it!

Issue with seam allowances

Hi @abroekhof,

Thanks for creating this pattern.

I see on the instructions you mention:

Seam allowances are 3/8โ€

Yet on the pdf for the sides and bottom I see a seam allowance of 3/4 inch and for the collar 3/8 inch.

Which seam allowance is right? My guess is that I may not be reading the pdf right.

Thanks!
