dctech.tv's Issues

What is this?

The idea is still forming, but I’d like to see if the interest is there to professionally record tech talks presented in the DC area.

What would we need to make that happen? I’ll do some thinking on the subject.

Intro and outro clips.

When publishing videos online, I’d like to have a short intro clip (maybe 5 seconds or so) that:

  1. Shows the dctech.tv logo.
  2. Shows the speaker’s name.
  3. Shows the title of the talk.
  4. Shows where the talk was presented.

The information doesn’t necessarily have to be on a single screen — I’m thinking maybe three frames: the first, full-screen frame containing the dctech.tv logo, the second full-screen frame containing the title and where it was presented, and the third being a lower-third graphic with the speaker’s name to be shown over the video of the speaker (so we’re introducing the person and their image at the same time.

I’d also like to have a short outro clip (maybe 2 seconds or so) that:

  1. Shows the dctech.tv logo.
  2. Shows a short dctech.tv tagline indicating how to get more videos like this.

I don’t yet have the tagline, but shouldn’t be longer than a short sentence.

Record equipment used.

For this to be super effective, I’d like to have a very quick turnaround — think talk tonight, video tomorrow.

I’d like to run recording like a live event, doing production editing while recording. It’ll allow immediate uploading of the content, and also helps solve the issue of editing — ain’t nobody got time to do hours of editing all the time.

I’ve found Here To Record’s Show and Tell blog which seems super helpful, and I’m thinking of effectively replicating their equipment.

Logo design.

We’ll need a logo for this thing, and probably some fancy motion graphics to kick off videos. I’m considering hiring someone, since professionals are professional maybe?

DC has a problem (problem?) with rapid turnover. I’d like to capture the idea of the historical side of DC, rather than trying to be #hip. As this whole thing is about amplifying people who aren’t white guys (sorry white guys, but you’re secondary this time around), I’d rather not reference the lineage of white guys that are Presidents of the United States. No busts of Lincoln here.

When I think of DC, I think of:

  • Townhouses
  • The Capitol Dome
  • Cool “Disco” Dan
  • Black Broadway
  • Go-go music
  • Streetcars and public transportation
  • Bricked sidewalks and stone curbs

I don’t want to emphasize the “tech” or “tv” part of it too much — neither of them are particularly inspiring to me. I actually called this “dctechvideos” at first, which seems more fitting than “tv” — but “tv” is a top-level domain. 😄

What do you think about when you think of dctech.tv?

Order stickers.

Some people go crazy over vinyl stickers. I’d like to promote that crazy to get the word out.

I’m thinking of two kinds of stickers, both with the dctech.tv logo:

  1. Die-cut. This would look nice as a standalone sticker.
  2. Hexagonal. These follow the hex sticker standard: http://hexb.in/.

I vaguely remember that https://www.stickermule.com/ seems to print most of the stickers for people, so I’ll likely go with them as a vendor.

Adjust HPKP headers.

I set HPKP headers for the first time, and I think I did it wrong — I believe I pinned the current certificate, when I should have also/instead pinned the root CA certificate. Additionally, it’d be nice to pin a backup root CA in case we have an issue with Amazon’s.

headers["public-key-pins"] = [{
key: "Public-Key-Pins",
value: 'pin-sha256="8661KWK58Pstdq/N5PKdnseT8AGMa+pKJUSan4kP4VQ="; pin-sha256="lGnqxto1pcHMrCWQ1LKzCzx+/6FUNtmN1wA6MYLBVHs="; max-age=86400'
}];

I’d like to change this header to pin three certificates:

  1. The current certificate in use.
  2. Amazon’s root CA.
  3. Let’s Encrypt root CA.

Making contacts in the DC Tech community.

Here’s a list of people who’d like to help make this thing happen!

I was DMed by Jessica Bell (jessbell) on dctech.chat, who mentioned that DC Tech Meetup has been looking for someone to record their events for more than a year. They’re entirely startup pitches, but have a focus on inclusion. She also offered to “make [a] million email intro's when you're ready to start filming!!” including saying “I can hook you up with most of the big diversity groups in the area (DCFemTech, Beacon, Women Who Code, Vinetta Project, Black Code Collective, Color Coded....).” Yay!

Experiment with transcription services.

I’ve transcribed four videos so far:

Name Video Length Transcription Time
Jax Test Video 0:08:00 0:34:00
Jackie Kazil 0:11:02 0:57:00
Panel Video 0:36:52 3:12:00
Kiley Williams 1:11:16 5:03:00

image

It’s not super maintainable for me to do this myself. I’m thinking of trying rev.com — but worried that the resulting transcript might not be written by someone technical (so common words and phrases for developers won’t be transcribed correctly). I’ll probably give it a go for a shorter video and see.
