I experimented with this - it did not result in any speed up. I failed to consider the fact that repeated fetching for all event regions would result in the file being re-opened potentially tens of thousands of times. I also experimented with adding a new NCLS containing event spans, and then running a preliminary check to ensure that the reads overlap an event before performing the rest of the parsing. The additional overhead resulted in an overall (modest) slowdown.
