Alternative Deployment Options?

For purely personal reasons, I wanted to be able to deploy this app on AWS as a serverless app. I managed to get it working well enough for my purposes: https://github.com/speshak/WeatherVis/tree/lambda

I'm almost certain that in the process of getting this working I would have broken the GAE deployment, but I don't think there is anything so crazy in my changes that would prevent both options from coexisting. I was planning on just maintaining my fork and merge updates from this code base as needed/wanted. If there's any appetite for this project to support both deployments I can work on cleaning up my branch to make it usable by others.

Add runway length to wind METAR graphic

Add runway length to the wind graphic, or somewhere else on the page.

Improve color scheme

Gray and light blue are very bland there should be a better color scheme to use.

Change cloud encoding in backend to use list instead of separate items.

Change API to return a list of sky conditions, not separate items.

Redesign entire application to make it look better

Redesign plus add better animations.

Display section start time on TAF graphic

When migrating to NWS ADDS, TAF raw data was lost in the graphic. It should be replaced with time data.

Add flight planning page

The NWS API provides a flight path api endpoint. Using that along with a map could produce a very nice way of planning flights. Lots of possibilities for the UI. Final result should overlay on map where hovering over an airport shows a mini METAR/TAF. Maybe a list showing the airports in order with visuals attached.

Remove all warnings from front end

The front end has a lot of warnings. The application still runs, but they should all be removed.

Add readable airport name to top of METAR section

It is hard to tell what airport you are looking at. Label it in plain text.

Change color of runways based on material

• Grass is green
• Gravel is gray
• pavement is black
• etc...

Add comprehension tool to METARs and TAFs

Add hovering over various components of the METAR/TAF to help improve understanding. Change labels to be more non-pilot friendly.

Expand search box width to help understanding

Color coding weather types for TAF

Color code weather types in the TAF. Change rain to varying colors of green based on the severity. Fog can be gray. Snow can be varying colors of blue. Red can be reserved for severe events.

Add crosswind calculator given runway, wind direction, and speed.

Tempo not displaying properly for wind TAF

Tempo sections of TAFs are not displaying properly for wind. Probably because tempo doesn't include wind.

Add ability to view past METARs by hovering over label

Add labels at top of page showing time stamps of old METARs and allow hovering over them to update screen to match that METAR.

Add Trends using old METARs

AWC provides access to not just the most recent metar. Adding the ability to show trends with the wind, visibility, clouds and such would be cool.

Add 24h graph with same format as radial but across time

When wind is VRB shows direction as 0, not VRB.

Update API examples in Readme

After #27, the example API responses in the readme are incorrect. Also the usage of nearestTAFs should be added.

Add Runways for all airports

I have the data for all airports in the US. Need to use it.

Fix TAF viewing on mobile.

After any scrolling the clicks become misaligned with the cursor making it impossible to see the details for the end of the TAF.

Add distance from searched airport to nearest TAFS

When showing nearest TAFS add a box saying the distance from the searched airport.

Show nearest airports on search bar

Add buttons on the search bar for the 5-10 closest airports with data. Requires similar data to #15 . Need find a way to query for US airports by latitude/longitude coordinates.

Add Closest TAF

When you look up the weather for an airport that doesn't have a TAF, the TAF section is understandably blank. It would be nice for it to instead display the nearest TAF. Another option would be a way to select from several "nearby" TAFs and the user can determine which is most applicable to their use.
