A guide for mainframers to open source software

Ambitus

The Ambitus project is a community for anyone who wants to understand how open source software works on IBM Z (also known as the mainframe). There are more similarities than differences between the mainframe and other platforms. The content provided by members of this community should be of use to developers, Linux system administrators, and traditional z/OS system programmers.

This project has two major branches:

• How-to and example information showing how code from other platforms can be developed, deployed and managed for the mainframe.
• A home for projects being ported to the mainframe. These ports are downstream from the original project, and upstream from the IBM Z platform. Developers can make their efforts more visible to others as they work, and share their experiences more easily. The goal is for teams to upstream their changes over time to the original project, enhancing the adoption of IBM Z as a supported platform.

If you're new to the platform, you may first want to review some things to know about IBM Z. This can be especially useful for developers.

Whether you are a user who wants to know more about the mainframe, or you have a project to bring to the platform, we hope you find a home in the Ambitus community.

Contributing

You can contribute to any of the porting efforts following the contribution policies defined in each repository.

All tooling can be contributed to using the guidelines at CONTRIBUTING.md

License

All ports retain the license of their respective upstream projects.

All tooling is licensed under the Apache 2 license, and any documentation and non-code will be received and made available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.

Governance

Ambitus is a project hosted by the Open Mainframe Project. This project has established it's own processes for managing day-to-day processes in the project at GOVERNANCE.md.

Reporting Issues

To report a problem, you can open an issue in respective repository. If the issue is sensitive in nature or a security related issue, please do not report in the issue tracker but instead email [email protected].

For ports at the Upstreamed stage, please report any issues to the respective upstream project.

Minutes:

• Joe: starting a new project to track installed packages across users and virtual environments
  • Needed by sysadmins that to track where all python packages are installed, and their versions
  • Similar in proposed use to the pip-audit function, except pip-audit shows vulnerabilities for virtual environment that are known. This project is to discover and track environments as they are created and removed.
  • Will try to have a demo for the next TSC meeting in 2 weeks
• Leonard: he and Elija are getting the latest version of PyRacf ready to post
  • Everything else is pretty much working according to plan with the project
• Joe: Last week's OMP TAC meeting was cancelled because of calendar conflicts, so no new news on the hostedd mainframe environment
  • We will continue to watch this, and push to be one of the projects active on this machine when it comes online

Port nano to OMVS

Hi!

I have tried in the past to port nano to OMVS

I hit many problems, and admittedly, I was very new to much of the technology on my previous attempts - but all failed ;) From memory I got stuck in a constant chain of porting a giant myriad of other libraries and tools.

Is there a good guide on how to get started - or a support network for when I hit a problem?

Minutes

• The OMP TAC meeting for June 24th is being cancelled, so our incubation renewal is being pushed up to June 10th (this Thursday). Joe is handling this.
• There are several activities in the works at IBM to create open source content that will be published through Pyzkiln.
  • This work will include content from a new partner who we hope will be active directly with this project.
• Elton had a calendar conflict and couldn't make today's TSC meeting. We will try again in 2 weeks.

• We had a problem with stale instructions for using the Grafana docker image in the Redbook. We are very careful with the security of the underlying appliance, and as a result, we restrict access to bind mount resources. We have updated the Grafana example in the linux-containers repo to allow successful container deployment.
• Joe is starting to add some content to the zos-native repo. The idea is to help people avoid the pitfalls that everyone often falls into when either 1.) coming to the platform for the first time or 2.) deploying an open source for the first time.
• Don't forget that the Open Mainframe Summit is coming up next month.

- Joe: planing a conversation with John Mertic about including code samples and examples.
    - OMP, and possibly Ambitus may be the best location for such code sets.
        - Moderates the vetting process required.
        - Allows an open audience of collaborators.
- Leonard: PyRacf
    - Completed a beta release last year.
    - Focus now on RAS and quality-of-use issues (primarily debug capabilities).
    - Memory management is key.  Certain operations are not yet thread safe.
    - Haven't heard from Henry in a month or so.  Frank will follow up with him about contributing.
- Joe: OMP mainframe is still a work-in-progress.
   - Last news was that we should have it in 3-6 months.
   - We should use Ambitus and Pyracf as a demonstration project.

  • Discussed the challenges for providing the CPU and Memory usage information on z/OS vs Linux
  • Joe & Giancarlo - IzODA used to have a psutil package that was mostly scaffolding

• Leonard - PyRacf re-factoring continues
  • Discussed renaming to OpenSAF, but isn't compatible with other identity management systems like Top Secret

• Elton DeSousa - Problem: many containerized environments use Prometheus & Grafana to monitor container state, and the ELK stack to handle logging. This is a heavyweight solution that uses a lot of resource.
  • On LoZ, Prometheus/Grafana uses 1.7 IFLs, and the ELK stack requires another IFL.
  • There are 2 potential activities:
    1. Research more efficient configurations (ideally we can resolve the issue this way)
    2. Fork and create downstream enhancements to make the necessary components more efficient
  • Looking for 2 repositories at Ambitus:
    • Prometheus/Grafana
    • Logging via ELK stack
  • Joe to do the leg work to get these repos in place.
• Joe - We have another Linux container example to publish
  • This is in support of Anaconda on LoZ
  • Whitepaper is in progress, and the container example will be referenced. Should bring some more visibility to Ambitus.
• Joe - we have been renewed as an incubator project for another year.
  • There are some best practices that we have to demonstrate before graduating to an active project. Trying to check those boxes before our next renewal.

• Joe: planning to revive zTron, based on comments that Frank has made about the function that this project should provide.
• Joe: Also planning to extract the core programatic path from the old PyRacf code to demonstrate how to make a call from Python to an AMODE31 z/OS application
  • This old code called IRRSMO00 in RACF using a combination of Python, C, and assembler
  • The bulk of the work was devoted to marshalling data from pointer/length output to NULL-terminated output
  • There are several z/OS interfaces that can be modernized through Python in this manner
• Frank: we have had input from certain end users expressing an affinity for the OSS/Linux philosophy of creating small tools that do one thing well, and combining them into pipelines that do useful things.
  • This aligns with the approach we're advocating here, so we want to encourage the user to share more details about their ideas.

• Frank is requesting a new sub-project at Ambitus that provides access to system interfaces in current high level languages like Python. By doing so, we create integration opportunities for automation and pipeline infrastructure in use today.
  • Functions represented metaphorically by bricks, and the sub-project will be a kiln for those bricks.
  • Simplify programmatic access to the platform
    • No JCL required
    • No separate TSO MVS, ISPF, or RACF environments.
    • Provide Python interfaces
  • Packaging and distribution details are TBD
    • C extensions or FFI interface.
    • Don't want to be too granular, or too broad
      • E.g. may have separate RACF and ACF2 dlls that do similar functions with different componentry
    • Ideally a Pypi or Anaconda channel, Read The Docs interfaces
