You probably didn't include the following line in httpd.conf or apache2.conf:

Include /root/.amp/apache.d/*.conf

This seems to be a common issue. In its defense, the amp config process provides instructions on doing the above, but the error in amp test is a bit opaque.

Also, a couple other common issues which would lead to similar symptoms are (a) needing to restart httpd and (b) updating /etc/hosts. In the current v0.3.3, amp config will prompt for instructions on how to handle both of these.
