Not possible to import using ES6 syntax

Either I'm missing something or it's not possible to import grud using the ES6 import syntax for modules.
If I try

import * as Grud from 'grud'

I get ReferenceError: exports is not defined in ES module scope.
Using the workaround provided by node

import pkg from 'grud';
const { Grud } = pkg;

I get SyntaxError: The requested module 'grud' does not provide an export named 'default', which is the real issue as far as I can tell.

Please correct me if I'm just doing something wrong as I'm relatively new to this js / node stack.

Allow setting default branch name

Currently, it seems the branch name is hardcoded. Would it be possible to expose an option to pass a default branch name (e.g., main, base, root, etc?). I am getting a 404 error otherwise.
