nyc's Issues

Where are you located? Poll

Hi all,

To resurrect our chapter from the dead, I wanted to get peoples "leave from" locations, from where you'll travel to our meetups. Therefore, if you live in Queens and travel to Manhattan for work, and you're most likely to leave from work to our meetup, then choose Manhattan as your choice.

Join Us On Gitter!

Hello All,

We're enjoying the new company that have gradually joined our Gitter channel and are striking up some cool conversations. We're also a great place to come for JavaScript help! If you're interested in being a part of BeerJS NYC with some more chat in your life, definitely swing by!

Come to our first beer session this Friday, May 8th!

HALLO! ๐Ÿบ

Apologies for such short notice, but don't despair, it's after work!

We'll be meeting this Friday at Zum Schneider (http://nyc.zumschneider.com/) at 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM (18:30 - 20:30)

We're gonna try to get some outside tables, but if not, we'll be inside at the bar!

Hope to see some new and/or familiar faces!!!

Welcome to BeerJS NYC

Phresh off the runway like Rihanna, BeerJS NYC is here.

Well, almost.

With your help, we can increasingly grow our group into a cool monthly meet up with likeminded individuals! Such likeminded individuals to which include:

  • Beer consumers, enthusiasts and/or conrnessouirs (Whisk[e]y is cool too)
  • User, slave to, and/or life-partner of JavaScript.

That's all.

Since this is a new group and I'm the only one responsible for it (at the moment), I'd like to set some milestone goals to achieve:

  • Reach a total of 10 watchers
  • Reach 5 active conversation starters/contributors
  • Reach a total of 20 watchers
  • Reach 10 active conversation starters/contributors
  • Have at least 5 active Gitter users
  • Outreach for first event, reach at least 5 RSVPs

As for conversation starters, here's some current topics that are of interest:

  • React; Redux; Relay; GraphQL; Isomorphism
  • Ember
  • Angular
  • Webpack; Browserify; Roll-Up
  • ES2015 and beyond
  • TC39
  • Testing; TDD
  • i18n; a11y; i10n
  • Microcontrollers
  • HTML5; CSS3
  • Patterns; Paradigms; Algorithms

So, if you enjoy JavaScript and Beer and live in NYC, then you're in the right place. Make sure that you watch this repository for more updates on upcoming events by starring or watching this repository. Feel free to open up issues with new conversations, or hang out in our Gitter channel. And, if you're interested in helping out, feel free to ping me!

Thanks,
Michael Hertzberg

Contributing to Open Source

Hi all,

Since I'm not the biggest fan of blog writing because I can't ever finish writing something, I wanted to use the issues area here at BeerJS NYC to continue creating some topics of discussion.

I think contributions to open source is strongly encouraged here (we're on GitHub aren't we?). Personally, I've always had some trouble on contributing to open source projects on GitHub, for whatever reason(s), to which may or may not include:

  • How do I find something to contribute to?
  • I found something, but there isn't really much for me to contribute.
  • Should I start my own project?

There's easy answers for each of these things:

  • How do I find something to contribute to?

In my opinion, the best way to find something to contribute to, is not to arbitrarily pick a project, but to contribute to something that you actually use. Is there a library that you've used that you'd love to add on to? Or even help fix bugs that have haunted you during work time? Maybe even an up-and-coming or "just started" project that could use some help. It's great to start small.

  • I found something, but there isn't really much for me to contribute.

It's totally okay! Be a watcher. Star the repository. Use the tool or library and see if perhaps something could be improved upon or even removed. Open up an issue. Start a discussion. I will say, some repositories/projects will have strict guidelines for how to contribute, so be sure to read those. You may be enticed to join a group mailing list. Be on the look out for specific issue labels that denote help is needed. Run their tests to see if something fails and report it.

  • Should I start my own project?

"Reinventing the wheel" is a phrase you'll hear a lot to NOT do. You don't want to reinvent the wheel, but you can improve the wheel. Fork a project and build upon it. Contribute to a project that could become much better. Sometimes however, you might want to go a different route. Perhaps the best project out there is too much for your needs. You want a condensed version. A smaller footprint. Perhaps a brilliant idea that currently doesn't have a project made for it, or in the language that you'd prefer. Start a project! Make a node module. Contribute to npmjs.org. Tag your releases. Think small. If you're into writing node modules, create one for a single isolated purpose. Take some hints from some popular contributors on NPM. You'll be surprised at how intuitive it is to bring various isolated modules in to create a new and interesting thing.

How about a Q&A? Let's discuss. We can even save it for our next beer meet!

First Meetup of 2017!!!

Come one, come all, we're doing up 2017 for BeerJS NYC. We're still looking for a venue, but keep track of this thread!!!

BeerJS NYC
Date: TBD, January 2017
Location: Tentatively, Flatiron Hall (http://flatironhall.com)

We'll have name tags and sharpies for names & GitHub handles. If you have something to show-off, be prepared to show it off. Feel free to share open source projects; what you're currently working on at work (given it's public); stuff you want to be working on and whatever else encourages you to bond with others with same interests and make new friends.

RSVP's aren't needed, but we'd love to hear from you if you plan on coming, through this thread or our slack channel (https://beerjs-slack-invite.herokuapp.com/ and /join #nyc). Friends are more than welcome! Be sure to bring a laptop if you'd like to show off some code.

A Gentle Introduction to Regular Expression โ€” a talk next week!

Hola all!

Wanted to have a moment of self-indulgence and announce that I'm giving a talk next week on regex with New York JavaScript. Soon enough in time, we'll have some beerjs meetups where we can do up our own talks! and we have the space for that too thanks to SUM Innovation, here in NYC.

Also keep in mind that our Gitter channel has been active lately, so don't forget to stop by!

We also really really really love funny GIFs:

React & Flux

I currently work at ShopKeep in downtown manhattan (across the street from Adafruit actually), and we recently had a long battled outcome of using React to re-develop our BackOffice (what ShopKeep customers use to administer their accounts). We're still deciding on what implementation of Flux to use, but so far we're strong proponents of using Marty.
