macOS HID driver based on DriverKit for Asus ROG notebook built-in keyboard. Tested on 0b05:1869. Should support 0b05:1866, 0b05:1854, 0b05:1837, 0b05:1822, 0b05:19b6.

For enhanced functionality, use with ROGSwitch.

Features

• Supports setting display brightness using Fn Keys
• Supports setting keyboard backlight brightness using Fn Keys
• Fixes erratic behavior of CAPS Lock key on keyboards with CAPS Lock LED.
• Automatically turns off keyboard backlight after 5 minutes of inactivity

Many features such as touchpad toggle, display off, sleep and airplane mode require use of IOKit. Currently, there is no documentation of interfacing DriverKit with IOKit. These features are on my TODO and will be implemented in a future release.

Installing

Download the appropriate version from the Releases and copy ROG-HID.app to /Applications folder.

Now open the ROG-HID.app from Launchpad, click on Activate ROG-HID Extension and follow the instructions.

The driver won't attach right away as DriverKit drivers do not attach to pre-enumerated devices. You can either reboot or use the reenumerate utility found inside Utils folder. To use this utlity, you need to know the VendorID and ProductID of your Keyboard. You can re-enumerate a USB device like:

#for vendor-id 0b05 and product-id 1869
reenumerate -v 0x0b05,0x1869

Build sign and install by yourself

In order to build and use this driver, make sure your SIP is disabled and you have a free Apple developer account along with Xcode.

Then, you need to change the codesign.sh file to reflect your own developer identity. Follow the steps below to find and update your developer identity.

# Find the code signing identity
security find-identity -p codesigning -v

Copy the identity you get and then open the codesign.sh file. Replace the existing identity with the new one.

Now we need to enable DriverKit development mode. Run systemextensionsctl developer on in Terminal.

Now run the following commands in Terminal to build and install.

make build
make install

Configuring

You can enable or disable additonal features and fixes in this driver by editing the Info.plist file of the dext. Setting value to 0 disables and 1 enables the feature/fix. Currently configurable options are:

• FixCapsLockLED - Fixes erratic behavior of Caps Lock LED on some keyboards. If your LED didn't work under macOS without this driver. You should disable this feature.
• BacklightAutoTurnOff - Automatically turns off the keyboard backlight after 5 mins of inactivity. Recommended to disable it on devices where there are multiple IOHIDInterface nubs for a single device, like 0b05:1866.

You need to edit ONLY the entry for your vendor and device id. Like for 0b05:1869 I would edit 0b05_1869 entry under IOKitPersonalities dict.

Install Xcode, clone the GitHub repo and enter the top-level directory. Then:

make build

Screen brightness changes while typing

Some times while typing screen brightness changes itself.

Driver extension is not approved to run

So I’ve been trying to get this working. App works, installed the .dext works. Rebooted, keyboard initialized, then nothing happens for keyboard backlight. Using a 0x0b5 0x1837. So I tried doing a kextcache to rebuild kernelcache. Which told me this error encountered during approval check: error domain=ossystemextensionerrordomain code=1 "(null)" any ideas?

Unable to load the dext

The app does nothing when clicked the active button. It doesn't ask for permission nor anything happens

Screen brightness randomly reduces to zero

I find a way to install this driver without xcode.
1- Download app and copy it application folder.
2- Click activate and close app(Repeat it few times until it wants a permission)
3- Go settings/Security and allow rog hid.
4- Reopen app and click activate one more time.
5- Restart computer.

-In Catalina and Bigsur Backlight and Keyboard backlight controls working well but capslock light is not working. Device 0b05:1866

ROG-HID and macRogAuraCore doesn't work on big sur 11.1. The keyboard is not responding.

Keyboard backlight does not wake on key press

Keyboard light does not immediately turn back on (even after mashing keys, unless an FN key is pressed). However the light will turn back on after 5 minutes.

I've tried one thing, but no results.
Added an if statement to handleKeyboardReport, hoping that it would mean waking it on any keystroke, but didn't work:

Unable to change Backlight from Keyboard

I have Asus TUF-Gaming FX506LU Latest buid of ROG-HID was crash all the time so i swich to version 1.4 with that i was Activate the ROG-HID Extenstion and with the help of ROGSwitch and from Keyborad i am unable to change any backlight.i am attaching my ioreg kindly sugget.

Keyboard not working on login screen after booting

after activating ROG-HID everything works fine until I reboot the keyboard stops working, after logging in via a USB keyboard the built-in keyboard starts working again

Pressing Capslock rapidly blocks keyboard access

When I press Capslock three times repeatedly I can't access keyboard for 3-5 secons. That issue also happening randomly if I type quickly.

Installation procedure

Is this adhoc kext included in the app a standalone solution for screen & keyboard brightness? I mean, do I need any prerequisite kexts or SSDT to go along with this on my Zephyrus GU502?

tried disabling the SIP using clover configuration, recovery and different flags such as 0x67 for CsrActivateConfig but not luck

Stops working after rebuilding kextcache

The driver stops working after installing a kext to L/E and rebuilding kextcache. Reactivating the driver fixes the issue.
