The package I downloaded from HSL was this one:
CoinHSL Archive 2023.11.17 (mac binaries - Intel)
CoinHSL-archive.v2023.11.17.x86_64-apple-darwin-libgfortran5.tar.gz
from casadi.
Trying to figure this out myself... (I know very little about working in bash/zsh)
It looks like the aliases have worked:
% which gcc
gcc: aliased to /usr/local/bin/gcc-12
However, there is no gcc-12:
$ ls /usr/local/bin/gcc*
/usr/local/bin/gcc-13 /usr/local/bin/gcc-nm-13
/usr/local/bin/gcc-ar-13 /usr/local/bin/gcc-ranlib-13
I tried changing the bash profile commands to gcc-13
but still get the same error:
checking whether the C compiler works... no
from casadi.
I tried compiling a c source file and indeed, it does not work:
% which gcc
gcc: aliased to /usr/local/bin/gcc-13
% gcc -v
Using built-in specs.
COLLECT_GCC=/usr/local/bin/gcc-13

I have no idea what this means.

Problem solved thanks to this answer on stack overflow.
It must be something to do with my Anaconda package manager (I was in the base environment). So doing this solved the problem:
conda deactivate
checking whether the C compiler works... yes
... etc
configure: Configuration of CoinHSL successful
from casadi.
Consider to edit the guide, with your suggestion about conda deactivate
and close the issue since you solved it :)
