Microsoft Operating Systems by Base Install Size

  • "Typical", "default", or "Install the most common components" setting used on install.
  • Networking and/or multimedia stacks were installed on older operating systems.
  • All OS versions installed in VMware virtual machines.
  • VMware Workstation chose default settings, such as RAM size, based on OS type.
  • Windows 2.x and 3.x include the size of the underlying DOS install.
  • Release date is for base operating system version--not service packs.
