chaoss-asia's Issues

Create a database of open source communities in Asia

Aim

Create a database, like this one, of open source communities in Asia. This can be expanded to a more global one after collaborating with other regional leads.

The example database mentioned above is made from R and is easy to maintain and collaborate on since it deploys onto GitHub pages. We could use the same template. Alternatively, if you have suggestions for frameworks/tooling that simplify the process, we would be happy to hear them. See the first checklist item below.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of front-end frameworks, web design, and how to host a website on GitHub.

Steps to create the database

  • Prototype of the database to be created locally and demonstrated during one of the CHAOSS Asia meetings
  • Initial data to be added from existing sources & research
  • GitHub repo to be created within the CHAOSS org/externally for hosting the database
  • Focus group to be created for maintenance of the database
  • Database to be opened for crowdsourcing to the audience
  • Showcase to the DEI working group for inviting global collaborators

Creation of focus group within CHAOSS Asia for differently abled people contributing to open source

Context

This is further to the discussion item initiated on our Slack channel by @rowlandm.

  • Similar to the initiative by CHAOSS Africa
  • Potential to tie into DEI, Metrics/Metric Models for Accessibility, and Badging, locally and expand it to a wider audience.
    • Events
    • Projects

What do we need to do?

  • Engage people with lived experiences and invite them to our meetings
  • Hold space for them to be a participant across the project by understanding their challenges
  • Empower them to participate in ways that are meaningful to them
    • Evangelists
    • Software development
    • Community management
    • Project/subproject management
    • Co-ordinators

Crowdsource Asian open source communities

Context

This is a child issue for #4, where we aim to collate & maintain a publicly available database of Asian communities.

Goals

In this issue, we want to capture information about open source communities in Asia. The community can be focused on academia, research, business, technology, or community-building and outreach efforts related to open source, but must necessarily be based in Asia.

Data format

Please leave your details in response to this issue in the format:

  • Community Name
  • Description
  • Website
  • Region
  • Category

Note 1:

If you are unsure which Asian region the community is part of, please refer to this Wikipedia entry about the United Nations geoscheme for Asia.

Note 2:

If the community is fully virtual with no physical presence, for the region, we would request you enter it as the region where a majority of the organizers are located.

Please note: All details must be provided for inclusion in the database.

[ Umbrella issue ] Crowdsourcing Communities in Asia

Aim

To start building the database we need to start figuring out a way to get stuff into it.

This issue is to track things like

  1. Organizers and their events in the following format
Community name
Description
Website
Region
Theme
  1. Maintain a way to automate data filling, still looking into it, few initial thoughts is Google Forms -> Google Sheets -> Writing a script there in google sheets to push the data to github, last part could be done via Github GraphQL.
