pmsservice's Issues

Plex starts at login after updates

Is there a way to prevent Plex from starting the PMS itself after an update? I'm assuming this is an issue because I run Plex from a different account than I update it from.

unable to connect to service. check settings

I have been using the plex media server service for a while. I had to install Norton Anti virus on my server to fix a plex crashing issue. After the install I began getting this message. The settings and port are set to the internal IP address and port. Should they be set to the public IP? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

PMS not acknowledging viewed stuff

Hello,
I have PMS installed on my Windows user account.

Every morning my father turns on the PC without logging in and starts watching stuff on his TV.. The problem is that PMS doesn't mark those vids as already watched, so when I login to my Windows user and access PLEX interface, it's not synced with what he's previously watched on TV.

Are we doing something wrong or is this a bug?

Thanks

[Request for help] Plex Media Server not running

I'm running Plex Media Server 1.7.5.4035 on a Windows Server 2016 Standard, Version 1607, OS Build 14393.1480 that I just rebuilt from scratch on a Dell PowerEdge T310 with 32GB RAM and 2-3TB SAS drives in a RAID 1 configuration.

When I upgraded from Server 2003 to 2012 R2 and then to 2016 and I was able to use Plex Service.

But after my new build, using Plex Service 1.1.2 closes Plex Media Server disabling a remote connection.

I hope you will be able to resolve this issue as I like you application very much.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to assist you.

Network Shares Fail To Mount Before PMS Startup on Windows 11

A bit of a mouthful...but the title says it all.

On Windows 11, it appears as if something happens on startup where mapped drives don't mount before PMS starts up.

Logging in, manually stopping Plex, and then restarting it fixes.

Will fork and see if I can submit a PR to fix.

Restart Auxiliary Applications

Current, this app has a built in feature that allows starting subsequent apps during launch. I think it would be a good feature to add a means to stop, start, and maybe restart those applications in case they run into any issues that make them nonresponsive. The app I use through the Aux App section is PlexPy if you wanted something to test functionality with.

Thanks!

[Feature Request] Select which components to install

This is more for my own reference, but just so it's out there for discussion:

I think it would be a smashing idea to adjust the installer so that the user can select which apps to install.

I honestly didn't even consider that the tray app could be used on a separate machine until it was mentioned when I broke the log stuff.

But, it's an awesome feature, and I think more people would be inclined to use it if they had the option to only install the tray component.

Build fails because PlexServiceInstaller dlls are blocked

Not really a code defect, but you might want to make note in the Readme to unblock the WixCommonUiExtension.dll when trying to build. It certainly would have saved me some time and headache.

Also consider distributing a prebuilt installer. Not everyone happens to have VS laying around.

Ability to change login from the service menu

If I change my login password the service disconnects. It would be nice to have the ability to change the password within the right click menu. Right now I have to uninstall the service then reinstall to renter the credentials.

Update compatibility list

Just wanted to confirm that it works without any issues on Windows Home Server v1, which is based on Windows Server 2003.

Newer versions of PMS are not supporting Windows Server 2003, so you need to use an older version. I am using 0.9.9.14 from here: https://plex.tv/downloads/1/archive

Unable to connect to service.

I never could get Plex to start automatically even when logging in, so I installed Plex Service Tray. It has been working wonderfully for years, but now it's "unable to connect to service." The settings are Address: localhost and port: 32400. When double clicking the tray icon, I receive the error message "localhost refused to connect" in Chrome.

After manually starting the Plex Server, then double clicking the icon does open Plex. Right clicking the Service Tray icon, still shows "unable to connect to service" even when Plex is running.

Any ideas on how to fix?

Plex service crashing / Transcoding?

OS: Windows 10E 1703 X64
PMS: Version 1.8.1.4140 (preview)
PMS Service ver: 1.1.2.0

Hey @cjmurph ,

Been using your program for a couple years now, it's great man.

First time i've been having some issues recently:

The service seems to crash about every 4 hours. Now, I'm not sure if it's the service or PLEX, as there isn't really anything in the service logs (Below). But when it crashes, it DOES recover.

I started to see this issue when I upgraded to the preview version to get the hardware transcoding. HW transcoding seems to be working great, but I'm not sure why PLEX is crashing?

I've been doing some research and it seems that other people are having the same issue on the prview build when using PLEX as a service:

http://forums.plex.tv/discussion/282812/hardware-transcoding-preview-issues-platform-windows/p2

Thoughts?

Stopping Plex Service does not stop all Plex Media Server processes

Stopping Plex Service via Windows service control manager (e.g. Services MMC snapp-in) does not stop all process started by Plex Service / the Plex Media Server service account used by Plex Service

Step to reproduce:

  1. Using Task Manger, note that no processes are running as the Plex Media Server service account
  2. Install Plex Service and configure a service account in Plex Service
  3. Start the Plex Service Windows service (it starts Plex Media Server)
  4. Using Task Manger, note that several processes are running as the Plex Media Server service account
  5. Right-click the Plex Service notification area icon and choose "Stop Plex"
  6. Using Task Manger, note that now no processes are running as the Plex Media Server service account. Plex Service stopped them all
  7. Right-click the Plex Service notification area icon and choose "Start Plex"
  8. Using Task Manger, note processes running as the Plex Media Server service account again
  9. Using the Windows "Services" MMC snap-in, stop the "Plex Service" Windows service
  10. Using Task Manger, note that several processes are still running as the Plex Media Server service account. The expected outcome is that there are no Plex Media Server service account processes running

Thanks for the great software. Hopefully you can reproduce this but do let me know if you need any more information. Thanks.

Shell_NotifyIcon(NIM_ADD) failed: 0x0

OS: Windows 10U

I did a quick search and found this thread:

So, should I add that "-noninteractive" to the PlexService start parameters?

Thanks,

Cannot install as another account

Hi there,

Since initially installing under my user context, I'm now unable to successfully get the installation to work under a specific service account context I've created for this application. The installation presents with the usual 'Unable to connect to service' when run under the context of the Plex service account I've created. I've tried adding that account as a local admin (it's currently a domain user) but I suspect that perhaps there are some settings which the MSI uninstaller isn't removing from when I initially installed it in my own context. Is there anything which you can think of which might be causing some stale settings on changing the context between different users? Ideally, I want to be able to run it in the context of a service account which will have its interactive logon rights disabled and as low privilege level as possible.

Thanks for your help!

Cannot Execute Non .exe files

Hi there,

I have Python installed and I'm running CouchPotato from git. If I point PmsService to a .py file, it won't execute it, claiming "2015-06-09 4:01:29 PM: CouchPotato failed to start. The specified executable is not a valid application for this OS platform.". Python script files are properly associated with the interpreter so I assume this is a hardcoded limitation. Any way that we can get support for this?

[Suggestion] A Way to Make Plex Updates Work Correctly

So, I noticed that the way that Plex does "automagic" updates is that it pulls down the new installer to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server\Updates. It would be pretty easy to simply check for a folder that's been accessed within the last couple minutes and simply allow Plex to come back up on its own (or simply wait longer. Say 10 minutes?) rather than trying to restart it immediately.

UNC path not allowing periods?

Trying to enter "\tower\media.movies" and I get a red tooltip and unable to save.

I can access the share just fine from the explorer.

[TODO/Feature] Migrate to Dotnet 6

While the project was just updated to Dotnet 4.7.2, ideally, we should probably be using Dotnet 5 or 6.

@cjmurph - What are your thoughts about making me a contributor on this project so I can help with issues?

Media "Not Available" When started by PMS Service

Heya, I get "Not Available" on all media inside Plex, when PMS Service starts the Plex Server. Does not happen when I manually start the Plex server.

Media is on a dedicated Windows File Server, credentials are entered properly into PMS Service. I reinstalled, and same problem exists. Any idea how to troubleshoot?

Thanks,

Unable to use Group Managed Service Account as Service Login

Hello. I run all my computers as part of a domain and users and computers are, in turn, members of that domain.

I wish to run the Plex Media as a Service (Service) under the login for a specially created Group Managed Service Account under Active Directory.

At the point of installing Plex Media as a Service, it is impossible to select Service Accounts as the login for the service as only the "Users" object can be selected so I then tried to change the service login through Windows Services.

Although I am able to select my Group Managed Service Account from the list of available Services, when I do select it and try to apply the changes, I get an error stating that the password is invalid. Since it is a Group Managed Service Account, I have no control over the password, which is generated at the time the Group Managed Service Account is created.

Would it be possible to enhance the application to make it capable of allowing the use use of Domain member Group Managed Service Accounts as the login for the Plex Service?

Thanks and regards,

Patrick

Various Plex/Pms Service Issues

After initially installing Plex then using AlwaysOn to run Plex as a service on a Windows 10 Pro x64 on a Dell PC it seemed to work fine for all and no login was required. Then after uninstalling AlwaysOn and removing it from the Registry and updating Plex Server with Plex-Media-Server-1.7.5.4035-313f93718.exe and adding PlexService_1.1.2.msi set to start automatically then started experiencing various issues. After troubleshooting these are the issues that remain:

Plex Server only runs while I am logged in to the PC.
FMoviesPlus: Error: List index out of range.
SS-Plex: Conversion Failed. The transponder crashed or failed to start up.
G2G.FM: Seems to be working properly
BitTorrent: Folder “Recent” is always empty, otherwise working properly.
Movies2K: Sorry. We couldn’t load requested content.

Changing PmsService user account resets PLEX Server

Hello.

I had to change the user account used to run PmsService and since then my PLEX Server went offline with all its libraries..

Is there a reason for this and a way to prevent it from happening again?

Thanks

All media becomes unavailable when app restarts plex.

For some reason if Plex randomly crashes or if I choose to stop it. When the wrapper restarts Plex as a service all my media becomes Unavailable.
But if I stop the service that had just been started then manually open plex everything works as intended.

I would love to keep this app but at the mo, I can't as plex refuses to work if started via said app.

Double Clicking Icon in the Notification area closes the app

When double clicking the notification icon, the program is closed because the EXIT option is the very last option in the list.

Ideally, double clicking the icon would open the Plex Web Manager page to access the server as per the original Plex icon which is no longer visible due to being run as a service.

Solution for mapped drives?

According to some threads I found, like this one, its possible use a mapped drive if the service mapps the drive itself, or if another service running as the same user maps the drive first.
We could add settings for mapped drives (path, username, password, drive letter) to the tray options, and the service would map the drives in OnStart method.
As far as I can tell it should work.

There is a network drive api we could possibly use.

Complete Overhaul

Hey there, @cjmurph!

So, I did a thing...

As you can see from PR #49, I added some functionality to fix my issue #47 where shares weren't mounting properly on Windows 11 reboot.

But, that PR was created after I'd only been looking at the code for a few hours, so I missed a few key bits to make the settings actually stick. I also found that while the code worked fine, it didn't actually fix my problem, as I needed to wait a bit longer between remount attempts.

Which means I added another parameter to specify how long to sleep between remount attempts. And with the combination of "# of remount attempt" and "remount delay" params, my stuff now just mounts properly on reboots.

But, I didn't stop there. I bumped the dotnet version to 4.7.2 across the board...updated the support nuget packages...and updated all the language-level stuff to the latest major c# version. This means a bunch of code cleanup to use all the fun new features, as well as other fixes my IDE was yelling at me about (nested IF statements, unnecessary casts, typos).

Did I stop there? LOL...no. I also added a param to tell it to not start Plex if mounting fails (avoid issues with auto-emptying of trash), and then...uh...themes using the MahApp library. XD

The side effect to this was a few things:

You can now read the "about" section, as mentioned in #46.
I added a copy of the app icon that's a tad smaller so it looks "right" in the app bars.
I made the bar titles "uniform", in that previously, I think 1/3 windows had a title in addition to the header, one didn't. So, I removed the title from the "about" window so none of them have titles.
While debugging things - I made the LogWriter a part of the common library so it can be accessed anywhere in the app(s)...and also possibly by the method used to launch Auxiliary apps as mentioned in #42. I also impulsively renamed the log file to "PlexService.log", because my log viewer app will just open it then. :P
I simplified the serialization/deserialization of the settings file...modern JsonConverter has no issues taking the data in and out without any custom handler. (Was debugging why Theme wouldn't save, did this...eventually realized it was because I was only re-building the tray app, and not the full service bits)

So - I apologize for just kinda doing all this without any prior discussion. I don't want to create the impression that I'm trying to take this project over or anything...because that's definitely not the case, and I've got plenty of other things to be working on. But, I've used this app for a long time now, and thought, "Hey, I could probably show this thing a bit of love...not just for myself, but the whole community.".

And, as it kinda snowballed past the scope of what I originally started trying to do, I figured the best recourse would be to just reach out here and say "Hey...I did a thing!". So, yeah...hey! :P

As I mentioned, I still want to look at the logging bit a little for aux apps, but everything I've done so far has been pushed here:

https://github.com/d8ahazard/pmsservice/tree/Overhaul

Ideally, I'd love to see this merged into the main project and out of my hands...just didn't want to submit one big messy PR to cover all of this. Let's discuss!

Takes forever to start plex

Running plex normally with windows it will start up in about 30 second max, and the web interface is available. When I use it as a service it takes > 5 minutes just for the web interface to become available. Is this due to a miss configuration in my plex server settings?

Are any updates being worked on to address the update issue? It shouldn't be hard for the updater to be automatically run as administrator without the UAC prompt.

PMS Service disconnects and connects Plex Media server

Hi,
When my computer restarts, the PMS Service starts the Plex Server but then it stops it. If I have the auto reconnect enabled, it will restart the PMS, but then stop it again, and it continues this loop. If I manually start the PMS, it stops looping. Anyone else seen this issue.

Install Info

Hi,

Sorry, but as the Plex Forum is still down ... can you perhaps provide the install instructions here?

I have tried to just have Plex start as a scheduled task (run directly, or powershell), but it seems that I have to be logged in to run Plex Media Server, even if it's not interacting with the desktop? Weird ... :-(.

Thanks!

Hardware Acceleration

As we all may know the sesson 0 does not allow access to hardware drivers. Is there a way in your program to start as interactive session? Interactive session should allow access to them also on a session 0.

  • Enable interactive services
    reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows" /v "NoInteractiveServices" /t REG_DWORD /d "0" /f

  • Create service with type "interact"
    sc create whatever binpath= "whatever_command" type= own type= interact >NUL

Might be something worth to be tried?

BUG: PMS will crash on Windows (1803) when using intel graphics.

background: http://forums.plex.tv/discussion/93994/pms-as-a-service/p48

The new MS Windows 1803 SCU will not allow for running PMS as a service when using Intel integrated graphics. Users can launch the service and will seemingly operate fine until a transcode session is started at which time PMS will immediately crash. When running PMS as a normal stand-alone application, everything is fine.

See the above forum thread for further details.

Is it still not possible to use GPU-based media transcoding?

I was interested in looking for a solution that would automatically restart Plex Media Server if it crashes. However, I just realized that I might not be able to do GPU based transcoding anymore if the executable runs in session 0.

If there is a GPU restriction to running as a Windows Service, If may be better for me to just make a PowerShell script that checks if Plex Media Server.exe is in memory; if not, to launch it again. That way, everything will work without any weird limitations.

Mention location.txt

Really useful that you can put the location of the plex media server in location.txt in C:\Users%username%\AppData\Local\Plex Service. It allows me to use it with 64 bit Plex.

Wanted to put this note here to remind me of how I fixed it after reading the source code.

THANK YOU!

Left clicking notification icon opens menu

With the new functionality to double left click to open Plex, left clicking the icon also opens the menu. The menu should only open on right click.

When Plex is opened using the notification icon, the menu remains open in the notification area and is difficult to close.
