Kaizo Ironmon+

Getting Started

Kaizo Ironmon+ Simplified Ruleset | Kaizo Ironmon+ Full Ruleset

Ironmon+ Touring Ruleset | Kaizo Ironmon- Ruleset

What is Kaizo Ironmon+?

Kaizo Ironmon+ is a variant of the Kaizo Ironmon Pokémon randomizer challenge. Changes have been made to the original ruleset with three main goals in mind:

  1. Remove rules that feel arbitrary.
  2. Minimize unavoidable instant-lose situations that only exist due to quirks of the original ruleset.
  3. Actually be enjoyable for players of Gen 5 and above.

The full ruleset is available here, and a simplified version is available here. If you don't know how to set up a Pokémon randomizer, check out the Getting Started guide.

Ironmon+ has two variant rulesets:

Ironmon+ Touring is the Ironmon+ spin on Ironmon Survival, designed for play across all generations.

Kaizo Ironmon Minus- is a low-BST challenge to give some underappreciated Pokémon a chance at glory!

What are the main differences in KI+?

  1. Held items are allowed in Gen 5+.

In the original challenge, held items are banned to make the challenge more difficult. However, held items are one of the more interesting and strategically diverse aspects of Pokémon, and ignoring them entirely both reduces the total decision complexity of an Ironmon run while also making most item pickups feel worthless. Additionally, Gen 6 and above have so much variance that allowing held items doesn't trivialize the challenge even a little bit. It is still unbelievably hard.

  2. TM compabitility is set to Full.

The original challenge only allows players to teach TMs if they are earned from gym leaders. By turning TM compatibility to full, the player is actually able to take advantage of this consistently, and thus gym TMs feel like a worthwhile reward.

  3. Legendaries are allowed if their base stat total is less than 600.

I genuinely do not know why this isn't allowed in the original ruleset.

  4. You may select any starter.

This just cuts down on starter resets, since you can't learn any of the details about the starter before you pick it anyways.

  5. You may swap out if you are affected by Perish Song

Perish Song is consistently cited as the most frustrating way to lose a run. Allowing a swap also introduces the risk of getting Roared, Whirlwinded, etc, and thus this introduces another layer of player decision.

There are more differences than just these, and you should check out the full ruleset before starting.

How do I randomize the game so that I can play this?

Most runners use Universal Pokémon Randomizer ZX. You can find pre-configured settings files for all the variants on their rule pages. You can find a full guide on getting started with Ironmon+ here.

Can I modify this ruleset?

Do whatever you want, I'm not your mom. Play the game in a way that's fun for you, you'll be happier for it!

So, what, you think the original ruleset SUCKS? Do we need to take this OUTSIDE???

The original ruleset is cool and unique. It's also something one person made for themselves that kinda just spiraled in popularity, and was never designed for anything other than Gen 3. If I thought the original ruleset sucked I wouldn't be putting time into making changes to it.

Why is it called Kaizo Ironmon+?

naming is hard okay. blame this i guess.

kaizo-ironmon-plus's Issues

Rival pokemon issues

the randomized levels of the rival are compleatly fucked up, they are supposed to be the 50% higher of my strongest pokemon (my pokemon is lv 5 his whould be lv 8); but somehow whene i start a new run the pokemon level of the rival is de 50% higher than the level of HIS previus starter (my pokemon is lv5 and his would be lv 12 or even higher) i don't know if this is some randomized rule error or a rom error and i don't know how to fix it
Send help

Shopping?

This ruleset doesn't exactly have a rule about shops so I thought I'd ask (especially since the original lets you shop for Pokeballs) does the Unlimited items rule also mean shops are banned?

Settings Still not working

Can we get an updated setting import please, it has been almost a year and it is still not working, please can this be updated

Pokemon Center Healing Rule Clarification Request

I noticed that on the Kaizo Ironmon+ Simplified Ruleset page, it explicitly states

Heal In the Moment You cannot restore HP, PP, or remove status conditions outside of battle.

But there is no explicit rule in the Kaizo Ironmon+ Ruleset v1.1.6 page that calls out using a pokemon center as against the rules. The only explicit healing rules include:

3.01 Banned Moves (a) Moves that heal the user may not be used.
3.07 Healing Items Items that restore health or PP or remove a non-volatile status effect may not be used outside of battle.
3.08 Field Center-like Healing Field Center-like healing, such as the S.S. Anne heal, is banned if you are in a dungeon.

The definition of a dungeon includes:

4.01 Definition A Dungeon is defined as any area that has encounters or trainer battles that is not one of the following: [...] A city. [...]

So there doesn't appear to be an explicit rule against using a pokemon center. The simplified rules indicate the following when there is a contradiction:

This is a simplified version of the Kaizo Ironmon+ ruleset. These rules may not be fully up-to-date, and so you should always defer to the full ruleset if there is a contradiction.

My request is for clarification to be added to the Kaizo Ironmoon+ Ruleset v1.1.6 page to indicate if pokemon center healing is allowed or not.

Thank you for your consideration.

Ironmon Rules Note / Disclaimer

Hi,

I wanted to put in a request to add in a notice at the top of your rules doc letting people know this is a modified version of the Ironmon Ruleset.

At current, searching Google for "ironmon rules" or "kaizo ironmon" shows this github rules page as the top result. Many people new to ironmon read these rules and assume they are the ironmon rules, but they're a modification of kaizo ironmon. It's not clear to newcomers that these are modified from the original official ruleset. There is often confusion in regular kaizo ironmon twitch chats between the rulesets, and many people who just want normal kaizo ironmon don't are playing under the wrong ruleset.

I'd like to see if it's possible to add a disclaimer at the top, to help point out that this ruleset is different from other kaizo ironmon rulesets (notably, the one from ironmon.gg)

Thanks
