Mysterious "Cannot set property '$' of undefined"

Hi!
The demo works fine, but when I try to npm install the component and use it in my project, it doesn't work and shows the error:

"Cannot set property '$' of undefined"

I'm follwing the Usage guide as per this repo. I also tried to not invoke the dataTable factory immediately when requiring it, and the error I get is:

Cannot read property 'installed' of undefined in Vue.use(VueDataTables);

When I console log VueDataTables, it is undefined. I did this cause I wanted to try what is discussed here >> https://datatables.net/forums/discussion/32542/datatables-and-webpack.
