You're right, the NA filter isn't needed. But I think the manual scale color is needed to make clear the difference between roads.
Besides, you're right to point to the challenge's solution as different from what it was shown before. The challenge's solution splits the data in two and then plots them with different settings instead of using a single tibble and adding a column with line width sizes. I'd argue that it's common in R to find different ways to achieve the same thing; I guess that showing this alternative solutions to the readers has some value; perhaps there is a better place to show this.
Anyway, I will prepare a pull request addressing the first part of your issue, that is, the futility of filtering NAs and then applying a filter.
