project-ideas's Introduction

Project Ideas

Want to get involved in D4G? In addition to browsing our current active projects, we also have this list of project ideas.

These are project ideas submitted by members that might not have a leader yet (maybe it's you!) or that need to be developed out a bit more to get started. You can contribute to their development or put down your own ideas.

Thinking about starting a new project? Want to see what ideas other members have submitted? Check out project ideas here.

Submit a New Project Idea

Got an idea for a new project and want to share it with our community? Get started by following these steps!

Take a quick look at our existing project ideas to see if a similar idea already exists. If it does, feel free to click on the project, read the discussion, and add your comments! If your idea isn't already listed, add it.

Adding Your Idea

On the Issues tab, click the green "New Issue" button. Add a title and a description for your idea. The more info you can provide, the better! That will help other members understand your idea and be more inclined to jump on board. Make sure to also add some labels to the project. This allows others to easily search the projects and to see what your idea might involve. D4G community members will likely comment with some questions or feedback and next steps on how to get other members involved.

Managing Your Project Idea

Try to keep your project idea active. If you can't commit time to managing the idea or leading the project itself, add the appropriate label to let people know.

Don't worry if you don't have the time, it's great for us just to collect the awesome ideas that are alive in this community in the hope that they will get developed in the future.

project-ideas's Issues

Vertical farm analytics

This project aims to bridge the current gap between controlled-environment agriculture and the computer vision and robotics fields. The intended outcome is to develop an open-source toolkit for plant analysis that can be adapted to container-size smart farms, vertical farms, or even small window farms at home. The project will enable farmers world wide to automate and optimize their food production.

Wanna join? Byspire does! They have a large vertical farm setup and are eager to collaborate. Byspire will stand for hardware setup (open source), and we will do data collection and analysis.

For some more details:
Byspire has an indoor hydroponics system in Oslo and is able to control the following variables:

  • Temperature (air, nutrient solution, root-zone)
  • Humidity (%RH)
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2)
  • Light (intensity, spectrum, interval)
  • Nutrient concentration (PPM, EC)
  • Nutrient pH (acidity)
  • Other

Byspire has a hardware (Arduino/rasp pi) setup with expensive sensors which they will co-develop with with our project. They have already started collecting some data but need help getting started with analytics.

On the organizational note:
They have agreed to collaborate with us through D4G Norway and are eager to get started. They will open source their hardware design and the global impact for this project is also important for them. Byspires is a for-profit company, but making this open-source for makes them a good collaboration. Their business model is to sell produce, not solutions. We have just had some initial meetings, and are ready to get going as fast as possible.

Help families send news to their members who don't have internet

A service exists in France that I have not seen in Norway, to easily prepare a newsletter with pictures and short texts that can be printed and sent to the grand-parents (or whoever) by snail mail:

  • an account is created for let's say a grand mother. It gets a specific family code.
  • the whole family (for us: 7 cousins) can have access to the same account using the family code
  • they can upload pictures and short texts, from the website or the app on the phone. The environment is private to the family with the family code. The pictures are cropped to a specific format, and the text size is limited so that the layout of the newsletter can be done automatically.
  • at the chosen intervall (1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month) a pdf newsletter is generated and sent by email to all contributors.
  • Then all they have to do is that one member prints it and sends it by normal mail. For the grand-parents that are in a retirement home the email could be sent directly there.
  • It also helps the family itself to keep in touch with each other because we all see what the other persons posted.
I'm really glad I found this service, so it would be nice if Norwegian people could have that too!

You can see an example newsletter here: https://www.famileo.com/assets/file/Gazette-DEMONSTRATION.pdf

Help the shelters for homeless predict how many meals they have to plan

For the organizations like RΓΈde Kors, Fattighuset or Frelsesarmeen who house and feed homeless or poor people, it may be interesting to be able to predict how many people will come so that they can be better prepared, depending for example on the date or on the weather.
The first step would then be to contact them to check if they have past data, and if they would be interested in a prediction tool!

Building a bot fighting rhinos poaching by reporting stupid tweets geolocalizing the animals

2 days ago: https://twitter.com/dodo/status/968410655509360641

Many articles explains that per gram, rhino's horn are valued more than gold. This trade increases rhino poaching.

And here is the kind of tweet people would do genuinely sharing amazing scenes of their holidays without realizing they might help poachers track & kill the animal the day after!

https://twitter.com/ToursDeMornay/status/967817169236054016

It should be relatively easy to report such tweet to Twitter or ask the author himself to remove it as soon as possible.

Long list of **United Nations' Unite Ideas**: current & past challenges leading to many on-going projects!

UNITED NATIONS' UNITE IDEAS is a global community for individuals, teams, and organizations to join forces with the
United Nations to develop & apply technology for social impact.

From mobile app development, image recognition, web apps, data science, cybersecurity, there will be interesting topics for everyone. And it's all for helping countries, non-governmental organizations, and United Nations entities apply technology to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Helping digitalize local NGOs with national/international impacts

  • NRC: The Norwegian Refugee Council (www.nrc.no) wants to design and develop a Programme and
Beneficiary Database (PDB) solution to manage programme and beneficiary data more efficiently and effectively.

A job offer was on Finn (2017-12-07), maybe we could contact them and offer our help.
    https://www.finn.no/job/fulltime/ad.html?finnkode=110065576&alertType=fc&WT.synd_type=agent

Leveraging web based and mobile technology and cloud-based computing, the objective is to develop and roll out a functional, reliable, and scalable information management system for capturing, processing, storing, analysis and visualisation of data related to beneficiaries, services, and programme workflows across NRC's core competencies and sectors.

The system will be used by field level programme and management staff including teams in remote settings, and will also be used by users across various parts of the organisation while ensuring security and privacy of individual and sensitive data.
