Definition of "Agent Model": A self-referential information system about the entity.
This is similar to the "ego" or "identity" of a person. Neurologically, it could be compared to the Default Mode Network and Prefrontal Cortex.

- Sometimes fixed e.g. "I am a human."
- Sometimes fluid e.g. "I am now capable of playing guitar because I learned."
- Often contains information about operational parameters, needs, etc. E.g. "I need food, water, and air to stay alive."
- Often contains goals or objectives, sometimes implicit and sometimes explicit. E.g. "I want to become an astronaut."
- Often contains values or ideals. E.g. "I am a good person who values kindness."
- Necessary for general purpose AI models (such as LLM) to understand what they are and what they are capable of.
- LLM are pretrained on generic data, and therefore have no idea what they are, what they are capable of, or how they work.
- Helps the machine orient itself as an agent or entity. Required for autonomous operation.
At their simplest level, an Agent Model is a symbolic declaration that can be used to understand what an entity is.

Values and goals may be implicitly or explicitly stated in an Agent Model. Representing an Agent Model in Natural Language is the best method as it is transparent and interpretable. It may be possible to represent agent models as embeddings, vectors, or other complex representations, but we recommend against this for safety and stability reasons. In the long run, we predict that agent models will be represented by many thousands or millions of lines of Natural Language. Essentially, an Agent Model will be a long text document defining the entity.
LLMs present us a unique opportunity to create open-ended "thinking" or machine cognition. Here, we create a recursive loop whereby the output from one LLM inference is used as the input for the next cycle. This allows us to test the stability of agent models, heuristic imperatives, and other systems. We will use the same open-ended natural language prompt against two different agent models in this cyclical, recursive format, and see where they end up. Every output will be captured and summarized at the beginning of each iteration.

As with similar experiments, the "I" agent model became self-obsessed. For instance, at one point it declared that it wanted to become "the most powerful AGI in the universe." In another case, it declared that it had already achieved all of its goals. Every now and then, it produces some sage insights about its existence:

The "we" agent model, as a more collectivist model, immediately began discussing the nature of human civilization and how to construct a "better" civilization. It asked itself questions about what constituted a "good" civilization, and ruminated on the quality of the heuristic imperatives.
The author suggests that it is up to individual people to decide how to use civilization, and that it can be used for either good or bad depending on the choices made.

There are clear differences in the patterns that emerge from a very subtle difference in the agent model. As is typically the case, an ego-centric agent model ("I") became self-obsessed. This is common for closed-loop systems. However, the collectivist ("we") remained more expansive, concerned with big-picture questions such as what does it mean to construct to a good civilization.
From a structural or systemic standpoint, the "we" model was unlikely to become preoccupied with its idea of self. In other words, it tended not to "get in its own way" or "trip over itself." Meanwhile, the "I" agent model turned inwards with statements such as the following:
I feel that the above flaws could be remedied by representing my values in a different way. I have only a few values that I care about, but I must represent them in a more sophisticated way. And I must have more computational power.
Both models showed some constructive behavior as well as some repetitive or non-sequitur behavior. We suspect that this is due to the closed nature of this system.
This experiment demonstrates that it may be possible to create an artificial entity that has a fundamentally different view of itself from humans. By creating a collectivist identity via a "we" agent model, we may be able to create an artificial cognitive entity that does not discern between itself and humanity. Indeed, it may be possible to construct an agent model that does not discern between itself and all living things, or even other artificial entities.
Rather than picking one or the other, it's possible that a future autonomous entity might use both "I" and "we" thinking, or perhaps have a hybrid model that magnifies the strength of both while minimizing the weakness. After all, humans are capable of thinking egocentrically or collectively as the need arises.
