Log and compare your visual astronomical observations

  • Visit DeepskyLog and start using a web application to prepare, log, and compare visual astronomical observations.
  • You can find more than 150,000 observations and 17,000 sketches in DeepskyLog. There are visual observations of
    • Deep-sky objects
    • Comets
    • Planets
    • Moon
    • Sun
  • Photographic observations are unfortunately not allowed in DeepskyLog. A very good website to log your photographic observations is Astrobin.
  • Be part of the community and start sharing your observations and sketches today!
  • DeepskyLog is free to use and will always be free to use. If you want to sponsor DeepskyLog, we will use it to upgrade our servers to improve the speed and the disk space. Sponsoring can be done by clicking the Sponsor button on top of the GitHub page.
  • If you like DeepskyLog, give it a star. It means a lot to the people maintaining it.

Want to contribute?

  • Read our Code of Conduct.
  • DeepskyLog is always looking for amateur astronomers to help improving DeepskyLog. You don't need to be a programmer to help us! We are also looking for Deep-sky database maintainers, translators, testers, bug triaging, documentation writers, ... As it is unfortunately not always clear to observe, amateur astronomers can still do astronomy by helping out the DeepskyLog team! Be part of the DeepskyLog community today!
  • If you want to help us improve, take a minute to read the Contribution Guidelines first.
  • If you find a problem with the behavior, database or translation of DeepskyLog, please open an issue.

Credits & Sponsors

  • This repository is maintained by the DeepskyLog organization on GitHub.
  • Logos, names and trademarks are not to be used without the explicit consent of the maintainers or owners of the DeepskyLog organization.
  • Our website is running on a web server sponsored by VVS - Vereniging voor Sterrenkunde, the amateur astronomy assocation in Belgium.

The DeepskyLog team

deepskylog's Issues

Unable to change description of objects in observing list

Author Name: Jan Vanautgaerden (@janvanautgaerden)
Original Redmine Issue: 98, http://redmine.deepskylog.org/issues/98
Original Date: 2009-04-08
Original Assignee: David Erzeel

When trying to change the description of an object in one of your observing
lists, you get the following error message after clicking on 'Beschrijving
aanpassen':

DeepskyLog encounterd a problem. Could you please report it to the Developers?

You can report the problem by sending an email to [email protected].

Thank you.

New printListHeader

Author Name: David Erzeel (@DavidErzeel)
Original Redmine Issue: 39, http://redmine.deepskylog.org/issues/39
Original Date: 2008-10-28
Original Assignee: David Erzeel

The printListHeader is renewed allowing immediately to go to e.g. the 100th
page of a list of 300 or so pages. Previously, "scrolling" 7 by 7 pages was
tedious. Now, one can go back and forth one by one, or go immediately to any
page wanted.

Extension popular objects

Author Name: Jan Vanautgaerden (@janvanautgaerden)
Original Redmine Issue: 12, http://redmine.deepskylog.org/issues/12
Original Date: 2008-08-12
Original Assignee: David Erzeel

The popular objects table can be made more useful if we add 1-2 extra tables
when someone is logged in:

  • X/Y if you have seen the object or not and/or L/R to add the object to the
    active list.

This option can be useful to observers because if they go to the popular
objects, they can immediately see if they have seen a popular object or not
(these must be the best!) and can immediately add them to their observing
list... just an idea...

Add extra fields when adding a new observation to make DeepskyLog compatible with the ComAST XML scheme, also add SQM

Author Name: Wim De Meester (@WimDeMeester)
Original Redmine Issue: 3, http://redmine.deepskylog.org/issues/3
Original Date: 2008-08-06
Original Assignee: Wim De Meester

The xml description

The following extra fields are needed :

-smallDiameter : an estimation of the small diameter of the object
-largeDiameter : an estimation of the large diameter of the object
-stellar : true if the object is stellar
-extended : true if the object is extended
-resolved : true if the open cluster is resolved
-mottled : true if the galaxy is mottled
-magnificationUsed

If the observed object is an open cluster :
-characterType : See page 17 of http://deepsky.fg-vds.de/download/dsl8.pdf
- A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, X
-unusualShape : true/false
-partlyUnresolved : true/false
-colorContrasts : true/false

Rework public lists

Author Name: Wim De Meester (@WimDeMeester)
Original Redmine Issue: 35, http://redmine.deepskylog.org/issues/35
Original Date: 2008-10-17

All lists should be public, unless the users asks to make a list private. The
new lists should appear on the what's new page, and you should be able to
choose to which lists you want to subscribe.

Extra information in observing lists

Author Name: Jan Vanautgaerden (@janvanautgaerden)
Original Redmine Issue: 31, http://redmine.deepskylog.org/issues/31
Original Date: 2008-10-14
Original Assignee: David Erzeel

It would be useful to add some extra information to the objects in your
observation lists:

Comment for each object, so you can add some extra info on why you included
this object in your observing list or where you can enter extra info like 'look
for spiral structure' or 'see printed detail chart' etc

In the generated PDF files, the Dreyer description (as it is now already
online) should also be included (the user should be able to disable/enable
this?) as to make an observing list in the 'David Erzeel style'. The extra info
mentioned above should also be put into the generated PDF documents (if
selected)

Add Icon to start observing list to the entry page.

After logging in, the main thing I can do - the important thing - seems to be: search for obs, search by object, download something, and add observation.

It would be nice to add a 'Start observing list' entry.

Wrong dates in observation

update observations Set date='20080831' where id=25827
dag).

When exporting a list to argo navis format, the argo navis name of the list should be given.

Author Name: Wim De Meester (@WimDeMeester)
Original Redmine Issue: 19, http://redmine.deepskylog.org/issues/19
Original Date: 2008-09-18
Original Assignee: Wim De Meester

When exporting a list to argo navis format, a pop up should appear asking for
the name of the list in the argo navis. At this moment, all lists have the
following name :

DSL xxx NGC xxx

Implementing this wish, makes it possible to use more than 1 list in your argo
navis at the same time! (It would be very nice to have this feature before next
week, before the observing trip to the Provence).

It should be possible to give extra description of objects in an observation list.

Add link to documentation on astrowiki

Author Name: Wim De Meester (@WimDeMeester)
Original Redmine Issue: 9, http://redmine.deepskylog.org/issues/9
Original Date: 2008-08-08
Original Assignee: Wim De Meester

A wiki page is being made on the astrowiki where some DeepskyLog documentation
is available. A link to this documentation is requested.

Maybe the link should only be available in the Dutch language, because the
documentation is only in Dutch.

Introduction page

Original Redmine Issue: 28, http://redmine.deepskylog.org/issues/28
Original Date: 2011-08-30

We should make an introduction page explaining the goal of deepskylog to
attract new observers and for marketing reasons. If you're logged in, you don't
see this introduction page anymore. This page should be the main entry to
deepskylog.

Sorting problem observing list

Author Name: Jan Vanautgaerden (@janvanautgaerden)
Original Redmine Issue: 26, http://redmine.deepskylog.org/issues/26
Original Date: 2008-10-07

When sorting an observing list 2x on the seen column, to put the objects you've
already seen on top of it, and afterwards using the numbers on top of the list
to scroll through the table, the reverse sorting is not kept (i.e. seen objects
come last)

htmlentities karakters in de databank

Author Name: David Erzeel (@DavidErzeel)
Original Redmine Issue: 41, http://redmine.deepskylog.org/issues/41
Original Date: 2008-10-30
