Adding the information from #317 to keep it all in one bug:

This is a proposal for documentation on multiple different cluster configurations:

    A 2-node cluster (1 controller, 1 runtime/proxy node)
    A 3-node cluster (1 controller, 1 runtime node, 1 proxy node)
A 4-node cluster (1 controller, 2 runtime nodes, 1 proxy node OR 1 runtime node, 2 proxy nodes)
    a 2N+1-node cluster (1 controller, N runtime nodes, N proxy nodes)

We have no current documentation on how to implement different formation configurations. This would be great to show probably in the tutorial section of the documentation. Some of the topics would include:

basic setup for each cluster configuration noted above
re-iterating the relationship between formations, layers, and nodes (a link to another section in the docs would work here)
best practices for DNS configuration (wildcard, proxy layers, etc.)
routing discovery to runtime layers using Chef Databags in the proxy layers
    multiple applications in a layer
a behind-the-scenes on how application scaling occurs across a layer

Anything else that I may have missed that others may want to have explained in the documentation regarding cluster configurations and how they occur?

@gabrtv the Django Project's tutorial is amazing. That is an excellent idea. 👍

If I get some time this week, I can get started on this.

I'm going to take a crack at the tutorial outline first. I'll share that here. I hope to have a first version of the tutorial live in the next few weeks.

I've started work on the tutorial. For now it's just an outline, but I'll continue to push the branch as I add to it so folks can review it. See: https://github.com/opdemand/deis/compare/tutorial-docs
