sobf's Issues

indoctrinate new members

@JoelleByars @alysiamb @EVolosci These are issues. Look through them and see if you can address any of them. If you can, you then close the issue. If you run into a new problem, you create a new issue.

Here is the Moodle Du Bois site as a demonstration of markup. Also you can refer to other issues by using the hashtag as in #10.

Conflicting Editions

Hyperlink to page containing explanations of all differences between the different editions

Complete by Feb. 10

Index has conflicting numbers

Need to remove the autonumbering from the drop down TOC (left hamburger menu, see image). That way, Du Bois's chapter numbers take priority and are not in conflict on that menu.

Bars of Music

rrath [6:11 PM]
hmmm, I might have found a really cool solution for the music scores. I can create sheet music from the midi files using MuseScore, and then save the scores as both wav and musicxml files. then https://wim.vree.org/js/abcweb.html to playback the music with an .svg vector image file that follows the notes. the documentation for the javasctipt is here
go to https://wim.vree.org/js/abcweb.html and choose http://dahi.manoa.hawaii.edu/sobf/musicxml/02%20My%20Lord%20What%20a%20Mourning-error.xml as the score file and http://dahi.manoa.hawaii.edu/sobf/audio/staging/02%20My%20Lord%20What%20a%20Mourning-error.mp3 as the media file. Can you get this to work in chapter 2 of scalar Du Bois?

preface not in yet

I think there are a few sections of the book still not in scalar. Anything that is not an official chapter

Clean up home page

  • Write "about" pages
  • foreward
  • afterward
  • remove "Contents"
  • see if layout can be improve
  • find out why it prints "WEB Du Bois" in h1

create SOBF folder hiearchy for media and docs

create subfolders at html:

  • sobf
    • 2sort
    • audio
      • staging
    • docs
      • staging
    • images
      • staging

I am not clear when scalar imports the whole media file and when it just imports a link. To be safe, I have set up a media archive as above. The main subfolders (audio, docs, images) are for media that are definitely to be linked from scalar. Staging is for sorting things out with bad formats, filenames, or just not sure whether to use them, or they are resources for doing our work, but not the final product. Stuff can move from staging to the parent folder, but probably not so much the other direction. I will put some stuff in there now, including the scalar one media files. You will still need the scalar media page to figure out what some of the files are as the students who worked on them did not name them well.

2sort is obvious.

THere are some copyrighted pieces of music here probably, so the url http://dahi.../sobf won't show you anything. have to ssh, vnc, or ftp in.

Since this is done except for populating the staging folders a little bit I am closing it immediately.

Lani,

Good essay, you got to the heart of the task and did some nice outside research to fill things in. Cite Levering Lewis as a regular book. You can get the info into Zotero from WorldCat or the UH library catalog.

In the "Sorrow Songs" Chapter, which we all read, Du Bois describes the music as of the "third type", "a blending of Negro music with the music heard in the foster land. The result is still distinctively Negro and the method of blending original, but the elements are both Negro and Caucasian."

WHat does that information lend to your analysis? How was sharecropping such a blend?

I'd like to see these issues addressed when the essay is incorporated into sScalar.

details:

DuBois (Du Bois)

travelling, loose (sp)

“Marching in the field of battle” could be understood as people continuing to work the fields or as the fight that African Americans would have to continue to wage in order to escape the prejudices that remained after slavery was abolished

nice ^^
Fisk Singers
Doesn't Levering Lewis say Du Bois traveled with the singers one summer?

media files in scalar2 are still from scalar1

All the media files are still located in the old broken scalar one. we need to re-import them to scalar 2 and fix the media library and all the stuff that is linked to the items in it. go to scalar2 dashboard for SOBF and pick media tab to see.

Chapter 1 image blurry

The image for chapter 1 is from an old version. need to delete that image and import "02 Nobody Knows.png" from SoBF materials, then insert the image into the page. See chapter two for what it should look like.

Chapter Format

sort 2sort

related to issue #8

Kelsey, can you sort through the material in the sobf/2sort folder. Need the following things to happen:

  1. rename all files to some regular system. The files in the sobf/2sort/way.net/SOBF subfolder will give you an idea. If possible, the title of the piece, the performer, and the reference in Du Bois (i.e. chapter number) should be in the title in a consistent order. If you are stumped by any, consult with me.you will need to look at the media page. Ignore SlaveSongs folder and midi files for now, but we can get some images and midi files from it later. If it looks like old student work or my notes, leave it be and I'll sort it. mostly concerned with the images and sound files.
  2. move (mv not cp, type "man mv" for help) them to the appropriate staging folder. mv is also the command for renaming files. you might need to brush up on chmod and chown, but I think I sorted that already. THe command "mc" is your cmdline friend (just type it from a dahi prompt). it will give you an explorer type of interface from the cmd line. good for moving bunches of files quicker. you can use cursor on the menus just like a gui program. You may need to be sudo to perform some commands.

innerhtml on home page js problem

Hi @digiah/dev I need help as I have exhausted my nonexistent .js skills. On the Du Bois home page, It says "Contents" above the path. I want it to say "Herein is Written" as it does in the hard copy. I tried inserting the following into the "add javascript" section at the bottom of the edit page under the styling tab:

document.getElementById("h1").innerHTML = "Herein is Written";

I think it is the right code but the wrong string in the first quoted part ("h1"), but it produces the header on the fly as part of the function to create a path (the actual table of contents).

Help? If you add javascript to the page itself it seems to crash the page. You have to backspace the browser to get back into an edit screen if that happens.

Proofreading master list

When each of these is done for a chapter, check off the chapter.

  • local media import the correct image from additional materials-images-staging with the correct format for the title and description. See the image page for Chapter 12's music for an example to model.

  • proofread the chapter and format it properly, removing any parts that are not in the Oxford Edition. If the parts are another student's previous work, paste it in to the google doc under the appropriate heading. If it is a link and the link goes to an actual essay or resource, put the link in the google doc. we will go over all this later. For now, you want your text to match the Oxford Edition word for word, and as close as you can get in looks. Keep any asterisks, as we may turn them into hyperlinks later. The only exception is "immigrant" as discussed in issue #1. Especially look for missing text and words that are glommed together with a missing space likethis.

Audio and analysis pages

Use chapter 7 for a model.

  1. add link from chapter just below song image to audio and analysis page using internal link button after highlighting inside the brackets of this inserted text: [Audio and Analysis]
    screenshot from 2018-02-27 11-46-27
  2. open audio analysis page
  3. get header information from Way.Net SoBF table and put it in at top of doc, on piece per line starting with the chapter title in h2.
  4. next comes the music iframe. Rich will do this.
  5. then comes analysis. Make sure it is in a <p> tag with no modifications to it. remove the <h3> "Analysis" heading if it exists.
  6. Then do the lyrics, which should be formatted thus: <p class=poem> with all line breaks (<br /> within the paragraph to do any spacing. Remove any &nbsp; from after line breaks if they exist.
  7. put in notes (see image) to Hampton (page title="Armstrong et al"), Fisk Jubilee (Marsh) or Sundquist
screenshot from 2018-02-27 12-06-02. If you can figure out whether the lyrics and music are from Fisk or Hampton, put in a note for that too (see cp 7 for example)
