Make raises a narrowing conversion error from int to char in xdisplay.cc

Hello,
When trying to make, I get an error about a narrowing conversion from integers >127 to (signed?) chars (file xdisplay.cc, lines 181-191). See attached command line output.
I tried changing the line from
char X_display::_imgdef1515 [N_IMG1515 * 30] =
to
unsigned char X_display::_imgdef1515 [N_IMG1515 * 30] =
but it gave me another error about conflicting declaration with a "static char" in file clxclient.h, line 95. See second attachment.
I also tried to change the static char from
static char _imgdef1515 [N_IMG1515 * 30];
to
unsigned char _imgdef1515 [N_IMG1515 * 30];
but I got another error regarding an invalid conversion from unsigned char to char, once again in xdisplay.cc

Do you have any suggestions? Sorry, I'm a noob...
