dmgbuild

What is this?

dmgbuild is a command line tool to create macOS disk images (aka .dmg files). While it is possible to create disk images easily enough from the command line using the hdiutil program that ships with macOS, there is no easy way to configure the appearance of the resulting disk image when the user opens it.

dmgbuild allows for full customization of the resulting disk image, without relying on Finder, and without using deprecated APIs (like the Alias Manager functions).

dmgbuild is a wrapper around macOS specific tools, so it can't be used on Windows or Linux.

ds_store's Issues

Bug in calls to _split2?

The code at the top of split2 takes only elements 0 and 1, as if it assumes the list is always length 2:

But then code inside _rebalance seems to pass in a list of length 3:

Does this actually work? I notice the tests for this library are fairly sparse.

Feature: Stand alone script

A stand alone script that takes an .DS_Store file as input and outputs the parsing output.

[question] Is there a way to handle remote .DS_Store ?

If a local .DS_Store file, ds_store works well on it. ex:

Publish latest version to PyPI?

I ran into the issue fixed by #3, because the version at https://pypi.org/project/ds_store doesn't have that fix included. Mind publishing the latest version there?

missing pyproject.toml triggers a deprecation warning from pip

trying to install ds_store on python3.11 with pip22.3 triggers the following warning:

DEPRECATION: ds_store is being installed using the legacy 'setup.py install' method, because it does not have a 'pyproject.toml' and the 'wheel' package is not installed. pip 23.1 will enforce this behaviour change. A possible replacement is to enable the '--use-pep517' option. Discussion can be found at pypa/pip#8559

Possible issue with newer OSX version

Bitcoin Core uses the ds_store module to generate a DMGs DS_Store (arrangement and background).
Newer macOS Versions (tested 10.12 and. 10.14) can't open the volume – containing the DS_Store. file – anymore (while older versions like 10.8 still can). Sometimes Finder even crashes.

The DMG in case someone likes to test this:

Removing the DS_Store file cures the issue.
