Syntax highlighting gets confused by optionality of whitespace

I just decided to start playing around with the Commodore 64 Programmer's Reference Guide that I got in a lot of tech hand-me-downs years ago, and I noticed that your syntax definitions get confused by the optionality of whitespace in CBM BASIC, as demonstrated by this example I chose to type in at random (from page 200):

Consider an option to highlight lowercase CBM BASIC

I've got my Caps Lock key remapped, so, when I poke around with CBM BASIC in Vim, I type in lowercase and let the automation fix things.

Given that I've seen other people doing similar things (sometimes as part of :make scripting and sometimes as on-save auto-formatting, would you be willing to consider something like a let variable that could be set to support highlighting lowercase keywords too?)
