Probably the same problem. I followed the installation steps of the plugin and got with the last step:

$ dokku letsencrypt:cron-job --add 
no crontab for dokku
new crontab file is missing newline before EOF, can't install.

Now I still have to update manually :-(, that was the whole purpose of the plugin, right? ;-)

PS The file '/var/spool/cron/crontabs/dokku' doesn't exist, in my case

This is fixed in newer versions of dokku. Please upgrade dokku, the version you are using is years out of date.

Reverting back to 0.18.1 worked for us.

dokku plugin:uninstall letsencrypt
dokku plugin:install https://github.com/dokku/dokku-letsencrypt.git --committish 0.18.1

I've hit that too. You don't need to reinstall a plugin. Update it like this:

dokku plugin:update letsencrypt
