This is a talk that I gave at UB Hacking 2020 about text processing at the command line. The talk is over, but the slides remain!
The file text-processing.org
is the slides, presented using
M-x org-present
in Emacs. The commands in the slides are (mostly)
debugged; I strongly suspect the long awk
command has a bug regarding
the first line of the scores
file.
The file sectioned.txt
is example data for the sed
command.
The files roster.csv
and scores
are sample “student” data for fake UB
students. It is used for most of the other commands.
The fields in roster.csv
are:
ubitname,personnum,Lastname,Firstname
The fields in scores.txt
are:
ubitname score
The elisp in utilities.el
should not be confused with good elisp, but
it was used to generate the UBITNames and person numbers in
rosters.csv
.
The names in roster.csv
are, to the best of my knowledge, completely
artificial. Any match to a real name is coincidence. They were
generated using an online random name generator, and are 50% male and
50% female (by the lights of the generator). I did not vet them for
suitability except for a very rapid glance over the list. I take no
responsibility for anything you don’t like in that list.
