it is saying it requires authentication
Calendar always shows week numbers because it can't read the week number setting from the system
We need to either create a dbus interface (on elementary settings daemon?) or we need to propose something for the freedesktop settings portal
Update all did not update all.
These are the steps I took. It probably won’t be easy to reproduce but documenting here so we can keep an eye out for it.
I had a bunch of operating system updates (~145) as well as app updates.
At the end, I still had operating system updates (~125) and some app updates (of the apps that were previously listed)
Update all should update all apps and there shouldn’t be any other updates shown once it’s complete.

Previously AppCenter (eOS 5.1 Hera on ubuntu 18.04) alerted me several times a week for updates on my currently installed software. Since quite some time I neither get any alerts nor does the "Installed" page in AppCenter show any available updates (e.g. firefox). When I check in "Synaptics paket manager" I do get several applicable updates almost every day (like AppCenter did before). I did that manual update a couple of times (even managed to skip an unavailable pantheon version) but AppCenter still remains quite (not showing any available update).
I remember that this started when firefox 74.0 was available (around March, 8th 2020) and since then I did not get any update through AppCenter any more (currently firefox is at 76.0.1, 4 non-beta versions later). Is AppCenter still the official way to update elementaryOS 5(.1) from canonical and other sources?
AppCenter notified me of some updates, so I updated, before update I saw that it is going to install a new kernel version, so after the update finished I restarted the computer, after restart the Xorg session wasn't being able to be started. I restarted the system again with the older (5.11.0-27-generic) kernel version that was available, it worked. Then I thought that removing and reinstalling the nvidia proprietary drivers would fix the problem, but it didn't, because for some reason the required nvidia driver isn't available in the new required kernel version.
The kernel only be updated if all the system drivers would work properly, because a newbie person wouldn't be able to know what have happened to their computer, if after a restart just a black screen appears.
AppCenter showing that I can't re-install the Nvidia drivers.
Obs: AppCenter log that is in the small dialog is bellow

Elementary OS 6 stable
With fresh install of Juno--update during download selected--boot into system with updates in app center. All apps update properly except Elementary OS, which gets about 3/4 through and then hangs. After a while it drops back to update as if Elementary hasn't been updated. When I attempt to update I get an "Authenitcation Required" dialog that appears over and again as if I keep just hitting enter.
The dialog comes up in two different sizes and starts to dance across the screen going right. It seems like there might be two different calls to the authentication dialog from two different places. I've attempted shutting down the app center. Then I attempted rebooting. If the system was going to boot after that it took far too long. I reinstalled and am experiencing the same issue.
This is on a macbook air 2011 in virtual box. The box has i5, 2 gb ram.
Update size shows incorrectly, apparently ignored size of new dependencies. See screenshot with AppCenter and apt upgrade
in Terminal.

I find the daily (sometimes several times a day) notifications to update the Operating System Updates to be quite distracting.
It would be great to have a setting to either hide these notifications from the badge display and notifications center or adjust the frequency either based on a time frame (eg: show once a week) or based on some kind of technical criteria (eg: notify on more significant updates).
I did see there is a feature coming soon to enable auto-updates. If this includes the Operating System Updates that too would resolve this issue for me.
We need to use AccountsService as a source of truth for the greeter, but it would be better for apps to be able to read a gsetting (and it sounds like this is especially true in Flatpak). It also sounds like the Epiphany team would be cool with reading our dark style key if it was a gsetting
Works fine with apt. It just skips the packages. Also since the package is in operating system updates group, it only affects that group only. I can update/install delete other apps just fine.
I get following warning.

Marius noted the Dameon might not need to "check" for OS upgrades; it could be hard-coded and we'd wait to release that update to the daemon until it's been well-tested
After installing proprietary NVIDIA drivers, Web tabs crash like when we were missing the GL extension.
Install the matching NVIDIA Flatpak GL extension when installing drivers.

Currently we have code here: https://github.com/elementary/switchboard-plug-pantheon-shell/blob/master/set-wallpaper-contract/set-wallpaper.vala
for making sure wallpapers get synced to the greeter. We should move that to the settings daemon so that things that touch the wallpaper only have to interact with gsettings
I guess we should consider if the "copy to library" code makes sense here as well to make sure wallpapers aren't accidentally deleted
AppCenter is working regularly with all other updates except:

While doing an OS component update, a dialog from debconf-communicate appeared indicating a config file conflict. After choosing to install the maintainers version I pressed the "Next" button. At this point nothing more happened - both the dialog and appcenter were unresponsive and eventually had to be killed.
Android and iOS both seem to deliver localized emergency alerts such as weather warnings, amber alerts, etc. @quassy helped do some research on emergency alert APIs:
The Unites States NWS has this JSON API: https://www.weather.gov/documentation/services-web-api
It looks like we can request access to IPAWS alerts by sending an email: https://www.fema.gov/services-and-systems#
MissingKids.org has public REST endpoints http://www.missingkids.org/bin/ncmecEndpoint?endpoint=en_US&rest=&action=hashTables&languageCountry=en_US
I inadvertantly started an "Update All" process while having Synaptic open. The process proceeded to certain point but then stalled with the progressbar at 100%, the spinner working, and the cancel button tooltip reading "Waiting". It was not immediate obvious what was causing the wait. Once Synaptic was closed the process completed quickly.
Clear user feedback should be given when an update process cannot complete until a user action is taken

When I start Elementary OS, I use to update the system using Terminal, by running apt update, upgrade, autoremove. After I update, it is common for App Center to notify me there are system updates, but there are no longer, as I already updated via Terminal. If I open App Center, there's no pending update to do.

For the third time in as many weeks, I reboot my computer after lunch and my wallpaper is black, dock is empty, and chrome is no longer my default browser. Not much issue; I learned to take backups after the first time this happened and I lost several hours of work.
After restoring from backup, I open my terminal and run systemd-tmpfiles --user --cat-config
:
e "/home/jlieberg" - - - 7d
That's bad!
I went into the code and found that the settings comes from GLib.UserDirectory.DOWNLOAD
. It should probably warn the user if their download folder isn't set up correctly, I don't even know where to change that, so I'm not sure why mine keeps randomly resetting itself.

It sounds like GSD maintainers would like to replace the housekeeping plugin with SystemD. We should try to be ahead of the curve on these types of changes: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-settings-daemon/issues/454#note_718178
I found out yesterday by accidentally opening the firmware page in the system settings that there are updates for my hardware. Since firmware updates sometimes close critical security gaps, I think it is important that the user is informed about possible updates.
Check once a day if firmware updates are available and notify the user.

Right now whenever I log on I am pinged about a few minor updates, that rarely require a restart. Why not just install them whenever there's reliable network?
Suggested options:
We should never auto-install driver updates or anything that removes packages marked as installed (as opposed to dependencies, which we can safely remove).
Not sure if this is possible
The gnome power statistics notifications are categorised as 'Other', have no settings to change when low battery warnings for the laptop or peripherals and whether they are sent at all. This means users have to disallow all 'other' notifications, or put up with being visually/audibly spammed by a critical notifications.
Example with my Apple Magic Keyboard which runs on AA batteries:
The notifications gnome-power stats provide should be disabled entirely and replaced with a native power-reporting-daemon which has some saner defaults, provides useful notifications and can have its settings changed from this plug.
It's been a common feature request that we have a way to schedule dark style:
In the same way that night light is scheduled
Displays black screen after suspending, only the cursor appears.
Elementary OS 6 Early Access
Linux 5.8.0-48-generic
I ran the update manager as normal and it siad /boot had run out of space and gave a command to fix it which did nothing "sudo apt-cache clean" or similar.
I may have fubared my system trying to manually remove old kernel packages, but even that didnt free up enough space, then removing the kernel updates manually form the update manager etc.. but still,
This was a default eOS install and the boot partition can fill up, there needs to be a non-tech way to the user to move past this.
I'd suggest just removing the old kernels automaticly and moving them onto the new ones.
Yeah, there's not space in my /boot to compile the new kernels.

Assuming that AppCenter knows which updates are security-related, we should make the updates notification high priority and change the copy to indicate that security-related updates are available

Before sleeping I was connected SSH -X to a RasPI and I have two active screens (HDMI) at the moment.
The prompt doesn't accept my root password. I had to cancel it.

Sometimes user wants to freeze a versino of a package because of a bug etc. This happened to me with Ansible 2.4.1.0 -- I had to downgrade to Ansible 2.4.0.0 and apt-mark hold
it.
Then I opened AppCenter, ran "update all" and it upgraded Ansible back to 2.4.1.0 -- contrast with apt upgrade
, which doesn't.
AppCenter probably should behave the same - not upgrade the held package.
After the user restarts the system (after an update that requires a restart), the restart notification stays in the notifications area. That is confusing to the user

This project from solus seems like a good starting point.

Many people disable notifications when they want to concentrate on some task and it's not unusual to forget to turn them on again. It'd be nice to add a timer to the 'Do Not Disturb' mode, just like some messenger applications already do.
Currently SettingsDaemon.Backends.Housekeeping
configures systemd-tmpfiles to clean up users' Downloads folder. In addition to old temporary files and trashed files this seemingly covers all locations mentioned in the Housekeeping pannel.
However, with the migration to flatpak most apps now store temporary files in "sandboxed" locations. These typically include either $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/app/$FLATPAK_ID
, which is deleted on app exit, or $XDG_CACHE_HOME/tmp
which is not cleaned automatically. This can lead to false sense of security for users who have enabled housekeeping options.
The $XDG_CACHE_HOME/tmp
location (inside flatpak sandbox) is actually located at ~/.var/app/$FLATPAK_ID/cache/tmp
on the host. We could cover these folders with one extra line in the tempfiles config file already created by the settings daemon.
Alternatively, this same feature could be set up by apps that use this particular tmp folder (see this commit for an example). However, this approach has 2 significant drawbacks (that I can think of):
--filesystem=xdg-config/user-tmpfiles.d
permission.I think all other temporary directories are already covered.
The setting org.gnome.desktop.input-sources.current
is marked "DEPRECATED: This key is deprecated and ignored" although it still seems to work.
We’ll want to provide our own settings portal so we can continue to use accountsservice as a source of truth for the dark style preference
ideally we could also use this portal to provide additional settings that aren’t in the XDG portal like week numbers (which is currently blocking calendar Flatpak)
The same way you can snooze nightlight right now, it would be nice to be able to snooze dark mode

Not sure if this belongs here or Gala, but reporting here to start. It would be handy to be able to set up a time to automatically enable DnD. We'd want to make sure this is "additive," i.e. if the user sets DnD manually, exiting the scheduled time probably shouldn't exit DnD.
I ran updates from AppCenter on an unstable elementary OS 6 build today, and in the process AppCenter removed a whole bunch of compulsory things like WingPanel and Gala because a required Plank library was not available. This seems like it shouldn't be possible for AppCenter to do.
