Hmm I can't reproduce with

(setq left-margin-width 1
      right-margin-width 1)
(setq fringes-outside-margins t)

I got it looking right by disabling those, but can be in conjunction with some other setting too. However, it is not so quick in the feedback as I had to get the buffer reloaded by closing it before changes was picked up. I will investigate more
