Why

This repo was inspired by this Hacker News thread about one software developer's experience with Upwork. For all those who have had bad experiences with Upwork, I wanted to create a list of additional resources that software developers can use to find freelance, nomadic and contract work.

Contributing

Please please please contribute to the list! If you have freelance work available or know someone who does, feel free to open a pull request to augment this list!

Thank you for looking :) Good hunting!

Differences between types

Clients Jobs Agency
Interaction with Clients Your interaction is with clients directly, organization does little/no communication with clients You interact with employers directly, organization does little/no communication with clients Organization handles clients and just gives you work. You have little/no interaction with clients
Control over working environment Generally you can work however, using own tools, supplies, set own hours, etc Employer controls how you work generally. Provides tools, sets hours, tasks, etc. Agency might direct you on what tasks to do but you have flexibility on how to accomplish them
Payment Client pays you, but through the organization (which may takes its cut) Employer pays you salary (withholding taxes) Agency pays you
Choice of Client or Project Complete control of client/project Complete control of job selection Little/no choice of project or client
Vetting/Interviews Clients vets you Companies vet you Organization vets you, Client wouldn't really vet you individual

Who

Codinronan originally started this resource, Andy Chase has been maintaining since 2017. Special thanks to everyone who has submitted corrections and new sites. Also thanks to Georges Kabbouchi who developed the website version based on a design from Ovidiu Alexandrescu.

License

None. Literally, why would I include a license in this. Copy, paste, skewer, go nuts. (Ok, officially, "The Unlicense")

Remote Digest url

Check the url for Remote Digest, nothing there right now just a default GoDaddy page.

X-Team?!

X-Team is not a marketplace or job listing resource.

If you're going to include X-Team, you'd need to consider adding any of the other 90,000 "hire our anonymous team!" outsourcing companies.

(Thank you for the otherwise helpful list.)

Ideas for improvement

  • Re-check types and fill in the rest of the types
  • Make scripts for:
    • Updating Alexa ranking (showing change might be cool also)
    • Re-generating markdown from data.csv
  • github pages integration with sortable/filterable tables
  • Ideas for more metrics and columns

Remove Pipeline from this list

Pipeline mostly focuses on PHP and Wordpress, which is fine. But after I attempted to contact them through their website, email, and also twitter, to cancel my subscription, I did not receive a response on any channel.

I now have to call my CC company and dispute the charge. They are a poor business and should be removed from this list.

What are the rules for adding an agency?

New Job Aggregator

Hi there! I develop a new freelance and remote job aggregator. It's called Periodix. (https://periodix.net/). Could you add it to your list?

[Request] Guide for Managing Time Zones for Remote Freelancers

Hello, I would suggest creating a guide or resource for managing time while working as a remote freelancer. We know that working remotely may have different time zones between the freelancer and employer.

Suggested Topics

  1. Setting Up a Schedule: Tips for creating and sticking to a productive work schedule.
  2. Tools and Apps: Overview of tools and apps that aid in time management and productivity.
  3. Avoiding Burnout: Strategies for balancing workloads and preventing overwork.
  4. Setting Boundaries: Advice on maintaining a professional boundary between work and personal life.
  5. Efficiency Techniques: Methods like Pomodoro or time blocking to enhance focus and efficiency.

Expected Impact

  • Enhanced Productivity: Assisting freelancers in managing their time more effectively.
  • Resource Enrichment: Making TheRemoteFreelancer a more comprehensive guide for freelancers.
  • Community Engagement: Encouraging discussions and sharing of best practices among freelancers.

No license doesn't imply permission to use and modify

Just FYI, if you don't make your license terms explicit your work defaults to full copyright. That's why people include licenses that explicitly put their work in the public domain and give permissions to copy, modify and republish. No huge deal in this case, I just wanted to let you know since you seem to assume the opposite in the readme.

Proposed rule

I don't think "weekly mailing lists" should be included.

So far they seem to just aggregate from other sites (which freelancers should be checking), and their only "add-on" is charging companies to post exclusive. Some of them also aren't very well maintained.

If anyone has thoughts on this let me know.
