Explorer doesn't even attempt to execute any PuTTY code. Various reports of it having been pinned to the start-menu at some point affecting behaviour. Unanimous claims that right-click -> applicationname works fine when middle-click doesn't, which is supposed to be equivalent.

@twpol suggests AppUserModelIDs may be at fault.

My research indicated that, for middle-click to function, the executable running needs to have been started from a shortcut or have a matching shortcut in the Start Menu/Pinned folder. Basically it wanted a shortcut somewhere that matched the executable, but I have no idea why, when the Jump List action works every time.
