Sort of scripts used with Cisco routers/switches from a Linux terminal to automated common tasks, as fast admin access or configuration backups in a very easy and direct way.

ciscotools's Introduction

ciscotools: scripts to make easy the everydays use of automated scripts to get administrator access to Cisco routers and switches, as well as perform timestamped backup files for each Cisco equipment on a core network.

All the router/switch access info must be well defined and contained into a config file named ~/.ciscorouters.
The ~/.ciscorouters must be useronly read access, as it contains the user and enable password in plaintext for each router/switch on the core network.
These scripts are bash and expect scripts, and depends on xterm, ssh, telnet, bash and expect to correct execution.

Please be warned that you need to know the enable passwords of all the core routers/switches defined into ~/.ciscorouters, and those passwords will be stored into that file in pure plaintext, so keep the access permission restricted only for you and nobody else.

Most of Linux distros have expect, xterm, bash, telnet and ssh available at their package repositories:

For RedHat/Fedora distributions (as root):

 yum install expect xterm telnet ssh bash

For Ubuntu/Debian distributions (as root):

 apt-get install expect xterm telnet ssh bash

For other Unix-like distributions, please consult the distro documentation for package search and installation.

The scripts contained here make use of the ~/.ciscorouters file, which contains all the router list along with access detail data to automate the whole thing and makes easy and fast to get access the the core routers/switches from the commandline. For an example configuration of the ~/.ciscorouters file, please consult the .ciscorouters file located into the samples directory.

Scripts definition and use:

* con: connects to a Cisco router/switch and opens the session into an independient xterm window on your desktop.

usage: con router_nickname

Note: the router_nickname (or nick_router_name, the name you give to the Cisco equipment to easy remember it), is the nick_name field contained into the ~/.ciscorouters file.

It depends on bash, xterm, expect, ssh and/or telnet (depending of the connect method allowed by your router/switch).

It invoques a new xterm window and calls *cs* to open the cisco session to the core router/switch with administrator (i.e. enable) access.



* cs: connects to a Cisco router/switch using the same terminal session of the commandline invoqued.

usage: cs router_nickname

Note: the router_nickname (or nick_router_name, the name you give to the Cisco equipment to easy remember it), is the nick_name field contained into the ~/.ciscorouters file.

It depends on bash, expect, ssh and/or telnet (depending of the connect method allowed by your router/switch).



* ciscobackup: makes a full backup of the whole list of routers/switches defined into ~/.ciscorouters and store them into the ~/ciscobackup directory on a timestamp_equipment basis.

usage: ciscobackup

It depends on bash, expect, ssh and/or telnet (depending of the connect method allowed by your router/switch).

It invoques the *saverouterconfig* expect script and pases the router/switch nickname found into the ~/.ciscorouters file.



* saverouterconfig: connects to a Cisco router/switch and retrieves the whole running configuration from the equipment.

usaege: saverouterconfig router_nickname

Note: This script is mainly used by the *ciscobackup* script, but it can use separately to get an online running config of any router/switch defined into the ./ciscorouters file.

Be warned that the output is free of any sort of pagination, so you can pipe the command if you like (with *more* or *less*) to get an usefull view of the router/switch configuration.


INSTALL NOTES:

To download the files contained into this project from a zip or a tar.gz file you can download directly from the github project web site:

  https://github.com/jamontes/ciscotools

Then copy the script files into your bin directory, and create and populate the ~/.ciscorouters with valid data to start using the scripts.

Note: Use them without any warranty.


COLLABORATIONS:

If you want to freely contribute with ammends and suggestions to the project of this plublic repo, then you need to install the git client (use yum install git or either apt-get install git, depending of your distro)  to clone the repository from github into a local directory for your use. Once git is installed, from a command line type:

  git clone git://github.com/jamontes/ciscotools.git your_local_directory
