web's Issues

Add links to administration tools [WEB40]

Submitted by: Milan Babuskov (milan.babuskov)

Anyone interested in trying out Firebird would come to the website expecting to get a functioning database server and graphical administration tool. I understand that tools are not developed by the project, but I believe it is very important to list some graphical administration tools on the website. Otherwise, many people would come to a wrong conclusion that this is a console-mode only product and dismiss it without discovering all the features.

If you do not want to promote commercial tools, please include open source tools like FlameRobin. You can add an "administration tools" section to the "Downloads" page. The "administration tools" page would have a proper warning that "tools listed here are 3rd party tools and not developed by the project" or something like that.

BTW, this could be a good revenue source for the Foundation, to ask a small annual fee from commercial tool developers to list their products on this page.

'Upcoming events' image should link to detailed information [WEB50]

Submitted by: @mrotteveel

The 'Upcoming events' image (currently advertising the '8th Firebird Developers Day'), should link to more information on 1) the specific event and 2) other events (if any).

Furthermore, I would expect a list of events (if any) to be available on the 'Community' section, or at least a more detailed message than just a banner.

Some elements not visible or not working with FF and AdBlock Plus [WEB41]

Submitted by: @ibaseru

Assigned to: Sergey Mereutsa (green_dq)

AdBlock Plugin successfuly cuts ad picture
http://www.firebirdtest.com/banners/9846.jpg
and the Welcome/Get Started ... block is not working.

Turning adblock off enables these features, but if Adblock does this bad things to that design, so other "banner-cutters" will do the same.
So, I predict that people with these software or plugins will complain "site is not working".

Wrong links in page Firebird Quality Assurance [WEB4]

Submitted by: @tonal

In page http://www.firebirdsql.org/index.php?op=devel&sub=qa (Firebird Quality Assurance)
All links in line "Read this announcement in Russian | Bosnian | French | Br-Portuguese | Italian | Spanish." have wrong format. And Firefox don`t recognized it.
For example
Russian:
http://www.firebirdsql.org/\"http://www.ibase.ru/firebird/fb2test.htm\"
or in firefox
http://www.firebirdsql.org/%5C%22http://www.ibase.ru/firebird/fb2test.htm%5C%22

Add "Get to know FB in 2 min" link in About page [WEB56]

Submitted by: @WarmBooter

I think it would be really useful to have a link to "Get to know Firebird in 2 minutes" document (http://www.firebirdnews.org/?page_id=165), in page http://www.firebirdtest.com/en/about-firebird/

I know there are already links to it in other pages, but the About page is probably a landing page for new users, and most of them probably are seeking for fast and easy to read information about what is Firebird and what it can do.

SQL Conformance page: several improvements [WEB46]

Submitted by: Sean Leyne (seanleyne)

Votes: 1

1 - Replace references to "Firebird 1.5" and "Firebird 2.0"
- simple "v1.5" and "v2.0+"/"v2.0 or later" labels are enough -- it is the Firebird web site after all.

2 - Change the width of the columns to make more at-a-glance readable:
- Decrease the width of the "Feature ID" column
- Increase the width of the "Feature Name" column
- Decrease the width of the "Firebird 1.5" column
- Decrease the width of the "Firebird 2.0" column

3 - Replace the current +/-/*/? symbols' -- they are not easy to see or intuitive
- Use words: Yes, No, Partial, Unknown
- Use icon: Check-mark, X, 'disabled" Check-mark, ?

wrong or obsolete version found 11.2, support 11.2 [WEB30]

Submitted by: David Rodrigo (davidroliveira)

I have also tried to installe the 2.5 snapshot server on another computer but it
still can't open.

The error message says (on a Firebird 2.5 snapshot server):

Wrong or obsolete version.
Unsupported on-disk structure for file FILNAVN; found 11.2, support 11.2

The error message says (on a Firebird 2.1 server):

Wrong or obsolete version.
Unsupported on-disk structure for file FILNAVN; found 11.2, support 11.1

Have you some good advices to me on how I can open the databasefile.

Please don't say, that it is impossible :o)

NB: I'm sorry my bad english. I hope you can read and understand it.

Historic Reference needs rewrite [WEB53]

Submitted by: @mrotteveel

Votes: 1

The Historic Reference (http://www.firebirdtest.com/en/historical-reference/ ) is in need of a rewrite and update (looks like it was copied directly from the old site)

Problems I notice on a quick glance are:
* Introduction is worded in a weird way (and grammatically incorrect)
* The historic overview is not really coherent (and some parts might be better used as background information to the history, than the actual history)
* Firebird history overview ends in 2002 with apparently the RC2 of Firebird 1.0
* Developers listed are ancient: some of them are no longer contributing, some of the newer are missing and some people are seriously in need of a more recent picture (if only to save them from embarassement :P)

Reserved words [WEB2]

Submitted by: Fabio Maulo (fabiomaulo)

I think we need a sigle page with all reserved words for all version.
In the site i find http://www.firebirdsql.org/rlsnotes20/rnfbtwo-reswords.html but there is only difference with previous version.
If i want know all reserved words and all key words, or all enbedded function, i don't know where i can find it.

thanks.

P.S. I'm testing Fb2.0RC3 with NHibernate to develop the new NHibernate dialect.

Replace "click here" with better link titles [WEB39]

Submitted by: Milan Babuskov (milan.babuskov)

Could you please change the http://FirebirdFAQ.org link from:

"The FAQ is maintained at a separate site by the community members. Please follow [this link] to be redirected."

to:

"The FAQ is maintained by the community members at [http://www.FirebirdFAQ.org]."

Using "this link", "click here" and similar wording for links is not considered a good practice. I'll browse around the website to see if there are more links like this.

Favicon is 'ugly' and out-of-style [WEB49]

Submitted by: @mrotteveel

Attachments:
examples of favicons.jpg

Votes: 1

The favicon on http://www.firebirdtest.com/ is 'ugly' and out-of-style for the new layout (and I think this also applies to the favicon on the tracker).

Preferably the favicon should be replaced with one that looks more like the logo included in http://www.firebirdtest.com/img/site/fierbird.jpg (BTW: is that a typo in the image name?), or like the favicon of http://www.firebirdnews.org/ )

ppc port and contest is over for many years [WEB20]

Submitted by: @mariuz

at the bottom of the page there is an ppc port contest mention

the contest mention should be deleted

http://www.firebirdsql.org/index.php?op=devel&sub=engine

and on this page shoud be removed the mention about contest

http://www.firebirdsql.org/index.php?op=devel&sub=engine&id=plat_ppc64

pure ppc64 should be created , seems that now firebird is now ported to ppc32 (that is by default on debian at least even on ppc64 machines)

PHP warning in left side [WEB22]

Submitted by: Umberto Masotti (umasotti)

In http://www.firebirdsql.org/index.php?op=devel&sub=plugins&id=external_java in left column, in list of generated tables there are missing links.

FAQ contains 2 links to parked page (leaving question unanswered) [WEB11]

Submitted by: Fei (fx)

FAQ page contains 2 links pointing to innappropriate content, and leaves the question unanswered.

Problem #1:

FAQ Page: http://www.firebirdsql.org/index.php?op=faq#q001.dat
Parked page: http://www.fbtalk.net/viewtopic.php?id=210

Thus, this question gets unanswered in the FAQ:

"Where can I get detailed advice about installing Firebird 1.5 on Windows Server 2003 ?"

Problem #2

Same question is repeated in the FAQ, but it also contains a bad link with no answer.

FAQ Page: http://www.firebirdsql.org/index.php?op=faq#q0015.dat
Parked page: http://www.tectsoft.net/products/firebird/install/

Scripted links don't work [WEB42]

Submitted by: @aafemt

Assigned to: Sergey Mereutsa (green_dq)

Scripted links (such as "New to Firebird? Lean more by reading its tutorials, articles and featured pages") doesn't work though mouse cursor has "hand" form. Scripted links must die!

Inconsistent behaviour: 'Welcome'-button reloads entire page [WEB48]

Submitted by: @mrotteveel

Assigned to: Sergey Mereutsa (green_dq)

The behaviour of the 'Welcome'-button is inconsistent with the other buttons. When clicking 'Get Started', 'Stay In Touch' or 'Contribute', the content is loaded below the button-bar without refreshing the entire page. On the other hand, when clicking on 'Welcome', the entire page is reloaded.

Steps to reproduce:
# Go to http://www.firebirdtest.com/
# Click on 'Get Started'
Expected: Content below button bar is replaced with 'Get Started' content
Actual: as expected
# Click on 'Welcome'
Expected: Content below button bar is replaced with 'Welcome' content
Actual: Entire page is reloaded

(Note: Clicking on 'Get Started' is optional, behaviour can also be observed when clicking 'Welcome' directly after opening the main page.)
