Firebug

Web Development Evolved getfirebug.com

On November 14, with the launch of Firefox Quantum (AKA 57), support for old school extensions will stop in Firefox. That means Firebug will no longer work for many developers. However, the work continues in the great Firefox devtools. You can try Firefox devtools by updating your release browser or downloading Developer Edition. Read more here

Source Repository Structure

See more information about Firebug repository structure.

  • extension Firebug extension directory.
  • tests Firebug automated test files and test harness.
  • trace Firebug tracing console.

Build Firebug XPI

In order to build Firebug *.xpi package run following in your command line (you need Apache Ant)

$ cd firebug/extension
$ ant

The *.xpi file should be located within ./release directory.

Run Firebug From Source

The extension directory directly contains Firebug extension files and so, you can run Firebug directly from it. This is the recommended way how to quickly test your code changes and provide a patch.

  1. Locate your Firefox profile folder
  2. Open extensions/ folder, create if it doesn't exist.
  3. Create a new text file and put the full path to your development folder inside. (e.g. C:\firebug\extension\ or ~/firebug/extension/). Windows users should retain the OS' slash direction, and everyone should remember to include a closing slash and remove any trailing spaces.
  4. Save the file with Firebug ID as it's name [email protected]

Hacking on Firebug

See detailed instructions about how to provide a patch to Firebug source.

Contributing to the project

Please take a moment to review this document in order to make the contribution
process easy and effective for everyone involved.

Following these guidelines helps to communicate that you respect the time of
the developers managing and developing this open source project. In return,
they should reciprocate that respect in addressing your issue, assessing
changes, and helping you finalize your pull requests.

As for everything else in the project, the contributions to this project are governed by our team.

Using the issue tracker

First things first: Do NOT report security vulnerabilities in public issues! Please disclose responsibly by letting [ this project team](mail to:team@thethis projectfirm.com?subject=Security) know upfront. We will assess the issue as soon as possible on a best-effort basis and will give you an estimate for when we have a fix and release available for an eventual public disclosure.

The issue tracker is the preferred channel for bug reports,
features requests and submitting pull
requests
, but please respect the following restrictions:

  • Please do not use the issue tracker for personal support requests. Use
    the this project Chat.

  • Please do not derail or troll issues. Keep the discussion on topic and
    respect the opinions of others.

Bug reports

A bug is a demonstrable problem that is caused by the code in the repository.
Good bug reports are extremely helpful - thank you!

Guidelines for bug reports:

  1. Use the GitHub issue search — check if the issue has already been
    reported.

  2. Check if the issue has been fixed — try to reproduce it using the
    latest master or next branch in the repository.

  3. Isolate the problem — ideally, create a reduced test case.

A good bug report shouldn't leave others needing to chase you up for more
information. Please try to be as detailed as possible in your report. What is
your environment? What steps will reproduce the issue? What OS experiences the
problem? What would you expect to be the outcome? All these details will help
people to fix any potential bugs.

Example:

Short and descriptive example bug report title

A summary of the issue and the browser/OS environment in which it occurs. If
suitable, include the steps required to reproduce the bug.

  1. This is the first step
  2. This is the second step
  3. Further steps, etc.

<url> - a link to the reduced test case

Any other information you want to share that is relevant to the issue being
reported. This might include the lines of code that you have identified as
causing the bug, and potential solutions (and your opinions on their
merits).

Feature requests

Feature requests are welcome. But take a moment to find out whether your idea
fits with the scope and aims of the project. It's up to you to make a strong
case to convince the project's developers of the merits of this feature. Please
provide as much detail and context as possible.

Pull requests

Good pull requests - patches, improvements, new features - are a fantastic
help. They should remain focused in scope and avoid containing unrelated
commits.

Please ask first before embarking on any significant pull request (e.g.
implementing features, refactoring code), otherwise you risk spending a lot of
time working on something that the project's developers might not want to merge
into the project.

For new Contributors

If you never created a pull request before, welcome : tada: 😄 Here is a great tutorial
on how to send one :)

  1. Fork the project, clone your fork,
    and configure the remotes:

    # Clone your fork of the repo into the current directory
    git clone https://github.com/<your-username>/<repo-name>
    # Navigate to the newly cloned directory
    cd <repo-name>
    # Assign the original repo to a remote called "upstream"
    git remote add upstream https://github.com/this projecthq/<repo-name>
  2. If you cloned a while ago, get the latest changes from upstream:

    git checkout master
    git pull upstream master
  3. Create a new topic branch (off the main project development branch) to
    contain your feature, change, or fix:

    git checkout -b <topic-branch-name>
  4. Make sure to update, or add to the tests when appropriate. Patches and
    features will not be accepted without tests. Run npm test to check that all
    tests pass after you've made changes. Look for a Testing section in the
    project’s README for more information.

  5. If you added or changed a feature, make sure to document it accordingly in
    the README.md file.

  6. Push your topic branch up to your fork:

    git push origin <topic-branch-name>
  7. Open a Pull Request
    with a clear title and description.

For Members of the this project Contributors Team

  1. Clone the repo and create a branch

    git clone https://github.com/this projecthq/<repo-name>
    cd <repo-name>
    git checkout -b <topic-branch-name>
  2. Make sure to update, or add to the tests when appropriate. Patches and
    features will not be accepted without tests. Run npm test to check that
    all tests pass after you've made changes. Look for a Testing section in
    the project’s README for more information.

  3. If you added or changed a feature, make sure to document it accordingly in
    the README.md file.

  4. Push your topic branch up to our repo

    git push origin <topic-branch-name>
  5. Open a Pull Request using your branch with a clear title and description.

Optionally, you can help us with these things. But don’t worry if they are too
complicated, we can help you out and teach you as we go :)

  1. Update your branch to the latest changes in the upstream master branch. You
    can do that locally with

    git pull --rebase upstream master

    Afterwards force push your changes to your remote feature branch.

  2. Once a pull request is good to go, you can tidy up your commit messages using
    Git's interactive rebase.
    Please follow our commit message conventions shown below, as they are used by
    semantic-release to
    automatically determine the new version and release to npm. In a nutshell:

    Commit Message Conventions

    • Commit test files with test: ... or test(scope): ... prefix
    • Commit bug fixes with fix: ... or fix(scope): ... prefix
    • Commit breaking changes by adding BREAKING CHANGE: in the commit body
      (not the subject line)
    • Commit changes to package.json, .gitignore and other meta files with
      chore(filenamewithoutext): ...
    • Commit changes to README files or comments with docs: ...
    • Cody style changes with style: standard

IMPORTANT: By submitting a patch, you agree to license your work under the
same license as that used by the project.

Triagers

There is a defined process to manage issues, because this helps to speed up releases and minimizes user pain.
Triaging is a great way to contribute to this project without having to write code.
If you are interested, please [leave a comment here](https://github.com/this projecthq/discussion/issues/50) asking to join the triaging team.

Maintainers

If you have commit access, please follow this process for merging patches and cutting new releases.

Reviewing changes

  1. Check that a change is within the scope and philosophy of the component.

  2. Check that a change has any necessary tests.

  3. Check that a change has any necessary documentation.

  4. If there is anything you don’t like, leave a comment below the respective
    lines and submit a "Request changes" review. Repeat until everything has
    been addressed.

  5. If you are not sure about something, mention @this project/maintainers or specific
    people for help in a comment.

  6. If there is only a tiny change left before you can merge it and you think
    it’s best to fix it yourself, you can directly commit to the author’s fork.
    Leave a comment about it so the author and others will know.

  7. Once everything looks good, add an "Approve" review. Don’t forget to say
    something nice 👏🐶💖✨

  8. If the commit messages follow our conventions

    1. If there is a breaking change, make sure that BREAKING CHANGE: with
      exactly that spelling (incl. the ":") is in body of the according
      commit message. This is very important, better look twice :)
    2. Make sure there are fix: ... or feat: ... commits depending on wether
      a bug was fixed or a feature was added. Gotcha: look for spaces before
      the prefixes of fix: and feat:, these get ignored by semantic-release.
    3. Use the "Rebase and merge" button to merge the pull request.
    4. Done! You are awesome! Thanks so much for your help 🤗
  9. If the commit messages do not follow our conventions

    1. Use the "squash and merge" button to clean up the commits and merge at
      the same time: ✨🎩
    2. Is there a breaking change? Describe it in the commit body. Start with
      exactly BREAKING CHANGE: followed by an empty line. For the commit
      subject:
    3. Was a new feature added? Use feat: ... prefix in the commit subject
    4. Was a bug fixed? Use fix: ... in the commit subject

Sometimes there might be a good reason to merge changes locally. The process
looks like this:

Reviewing and merging changes locally

git checkout master # or the main branch configured on github
git pull # get latest changes
git checkout feature-branch # replace name with your branch
git rebase master
git checkout master
git merge feature-branch # replace name with your branch
git push

When merging PRs from forked repositories, we recommend you install the
hub command line tools.

This allows you to do:

hub checkout link-to-pull-request

meaning that you will automatically check out the branch for the pull request,
without needing any other steps like setting git upstreams! ✨

Firebug 3.0.0-alpha.13 - "extensions.firebug.netexport.defaultFileName" not working

Hello,

I have been following this previous thread (#9 (comment)) in attempting to name an exported HAR file to my Selenium/Java script that was previously working with Firebug 2.x that I was using before. Per the suggestions from the linked page above, I updated to the newest Firebug (3.0.0-alpha.130), and updated my code to point to this XPI. Looking in "about:config", I cannot find the defaultFileName extension. I confirmed within the plugin list that it is indeed using the newest Firebug.

Furthermore, after changing my code to the XPI name of the newest Firebug, no longer captures the HAR files as it did before. There simply is no record of the HAR files in either the assigned directory in the code, nor any previously used folder.

As a java beginner, I am confused how such a little change would break my ability to download the HAR files.

For reference, here is my code. Please let me know if I'm just making a stupid mistake or if I have actually encountered a bug!

Instances in pop-ups don't unregister http listeners

State: auto-export on, DBG_NETEXPORT on
Env: Mac FF16,FF28
Issue: Popups start a new instance of FB and NE, and after close, FBTrace still shows prints from closed instance.

Temp Fix (resolves issue for me) :
In automation.js, append in main function:
window.top.addEventListener("close",HttpObserver.unregister.bind(HttpObserver));

Auto exporting does not work for POST requests

I have seen many discussions on the trick to make auto exporting for POST requests, but that does not work reliably or behave as same as GET requests.

For every GET requests, after pageloadtimeout (which defaults to 1500ms), the requests are automatically saved to har directory that I specified.

However, for POST request, it seems it won't be triggered to be saved by itself. If I set pageloadtimeout to be very big, as some people suggested, those POST requests will be combined with preceding GET request. Since we can't tell how long each request (GET and POST) will take, the pageloadtimeout has to be set very long in order to cover all POST requests in the test. However, the biggest problem is those POST requests are combined into one har with preceding GET request.

What I want to achieve is to capture har file for each individual click (for both GET and POST), so we can monitor client performance on per user click basis. I set extensions.firebug.net.defaultPersist to false, which nicely group the GET requests into separate har files per click. However, I can't make POST requests to be saved in its own har file without attach to preceding GET request.

I am using latest available firefox (v33.0), firebug (2.0.4), netexport (0.9b6).

Auto Export is not auto exporting

I can set Firebug to persist and then save as a HAR file, but when I select Auto Export, it is not writing files to the auto export directory.

  • Auto export is checked under options.
  • Open Log Directory opens the location I am expecting.
  • If I click the circle to activate auto export, it does toggle the checked value under options, but the circle doesn't change colors. I would expect it to maybe go red?

Could there be a permissions problem with Firefox/Firebug/NetExport being able to write to the file system automatically?

Thanks!

;D

Suggestion: Add datetime to export filename and allow tags

Nice to have - exported files have the option to append a date/time stamp in a sortable fashion (e.g., YYYYMMDDHHMMSSmm) before the .har extension. It would also be great to allow the user to add a tag of sorts to identify the action taken when the export was made (e.g., logon, selectingXYZ, updatingABC, etc)

Issue exporting har file for a single (non-html) request

I have a Java/Selenium program that exports that har files using firebug/netexport combination. It works ok for real sites but I also try it with some files of various sizes - they typically just contain random characters like below example:

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

When I check the exported har though it only contains:

{
"log": {
"version": "1.1",
"creator": {
"name": "Firebug",
"version": "2.0"
},
"browser": {
"name": "Firefox",
"version": "30.0"
},
"pages": [],
"entries": []
}
}

Whereas if I request it manually then it exports OK.

I set the following preferences for the java tool:

// Set default Firefox preferences
profOpt.setPreference("app.update.enabled", false);
String domain = "extensions.firebug.";

                // Set default Firebug preferences
                profOpt.setPreference(domain + "currentVersion", "2.0.2");
                profOpt.setPreference(domain + "allPagesActivation", "on");
                profOpt.setPreference(domain + "defaultPanelName", "net");
                profOpt.setPreference(domain + "net.enableSites", true);

                // Set default NetExport preferences
                profOpt.setPreference(domain + "netexport.alwaysEnableAutoExport", true);
                profOpt.setPreference(domain + "netexport.showPreview", false);
                profOpt.setPreference(domain + "netexport.defaultLogDir", outputDir);
                profOpt.setPreference(domain + "netexport.autoExportToFile", true);
                profOpt.setPreference(domain + "net.defaultPersist", false);
                profOpt.setPreference(domain + "console.defaultPersist", false);
                profOpt.setPreference(domain + "netexport.includeResponseBodies", false);
                profOpt.setPreference(domain + "netexport.pageLoadedTimeout", 0);
                profOpt.setPreference("extensions.firebug.netexport.secretToken", "abcd");
                profOpt.setPreference(domain + "net.logLimit", 4000);
                // Prevent favicon requests which can screw up timings
                profOpt.setPreference("browser.chrome.favicons", false);
                profOpt.setPreference("browser.chrome.site_icons", false);
                // Disable IPv6 DNS lookups
                profOpt.setPreference("network.dns.disableIPv6", true);

Any idea what might be happening?

Installed netExport-0.9b7.xpi, but not seeing Export option

I installed netExport-0.9b7.xpi, recycled firefox, and when I click on the firebug icon, I expect to see a new "export" option under the "Net" tab, but it is not there. Any help you can provide would be appreciated. I am running FF 45.3.0.

cannot aggregate multiple requests into a single export

Hi,
I am using Netexport with WebDriver and I am trying to record the network traffic for a page, but I have to log in first so I can take the data I am interested in.
In this case Netexport doesn't permit a time control for setting up when to generate the har file. It doesn't wait for a flow to be completed and than to generate the file.
Do you have any suggestions about this ? It's there a way to control it ?
Thank you,
Ben

Recording AJAX Requests

2013-10-04-152140_3286x1240_scrot

The circled requests are not exported to my directory. I presume they are AJAX requests. How can I export them too?

NetExport autoExport doest not work

working with Selenium, but also tried this manually, when open FF browser with autoexport = true and trying to run window.NetExport.triggerExport("tokenName") getting undefined netExport.
When turn off autoExport manually and then turning on, same action working well

__exposedProps__ is deprecated

Using exposedProps to expose NetExport to the content is deprecated use the following construct instead:

var protectedFunctions = XPCNativeWrapper.unwrap(Cu.createObjectIn(win));
for (var p in functions)
    protectedFunctions[p] = protect(functions[p]);
Cu.makeObjectPropsNormal(protectedFunctions);
win.wrappedJSObject.NetExport = protectedFunctions;

NetExport doesn't export connection (and a few other HAR 1.2 fields)

When using Firebug 2 and the NetExport extension with it, to export HAR files, the resultant HARs don't have the connection fields (and all the other fields introduced in HAR 1.2).

I know Firebug 3 will provide in built support for exporting HARs but until that becomes stable and is shipped out to everyone, we need to fix this here and ship it to the Firebug 2 users.

Set a constant name for the HAR file

it would be nice to be able to set the name of the exported file.

if would be even nicer if i were able to issue a command like this:

save_now(under_this_name)

if maybe i wanted to save the requests between two clicks on the same page

thank you!

sometimes export a har end with many NUL

when I use netExport and selenium to auto export the har file, the har file sometimes contains many NUL in the end.
And what does the zero response status exactly represent ?
problem

Unicode characters in Har break beacon service

HarUploader.prototype.start()
includes:
this.request.setRequestHeader("Content-Length", jsonString.length);

which when jsonString includes unicode characters (by that, I mean bom-containing characters), the jsonString.length != jsonString.byteLength.

This makes the header incorrect and my beacon service can't parse the Har string.

Fix: I recommend just not setting the "Content-Length" header manually. Removing that line fixed the problem for me.

Addon needs to be signed

https://wiki.mozilla.org/Addons/Extension_Signing
Firefox 40: Firefox warns about signatures but doesn't enforce them.
Firefox 41: Firefox will have a preference that allows signature enforcement to be disabled (xpinstall.signatures.required in about:config).
Firefox 42: Release and Beta versions of Firefox will not allow unsigned extensions to be installed, with no override.
