nikola's Introduction

Hi there 👋

I'm a tech entrepreneur since I was a teenager when I started a web hosting company (Gigahost) back in 2002 in João Pessoa, Brazil.

Gigahost survived for almost a decade before it was acquired by a bigger ISP in Brazil. In the meantime, I participated in many other ventures, including a Brazilian streaming service called Twitcast.me, a medical appointment service called Smark, a Groupon-like service called Polvo Pirata, and many other initiatives, all under a development agency umbrella called 6PS Group, based in Brazil.

In 2012, I moved to New York and eventually started another experiment called HackHands, which shortly became a company and after a year it was acquired by Pluralsight. For that matter, I've moved to Utah in 2015, and kept working with Pluralsight until 2020.

Today, I'm back to my entrepreneurial journey and I’m currently working on moises.ai. I'm also partner at Fuze, a development shop based Brazil, focused on native mobile development.

nikola's Issues

Trouble running in linux

I'm having trouble getting this to run in Linux.

From https://nikola.site I clicked download, and then downloaded Nikola_0.2.6_amd64.deb into a working directory named /nobak/Installers/Tesla/Nikola

Then in terminal I run this to install it: sudo dpkg -i /nobak/Installers/Tesla/Nokola

In the desktop menu I can see that the menu icon runs this:

Name: Nikola
Command:	"/opt/Nikola/nikola/" %U
Comment: Open source and unoffocial cross-platform desktop app to control tesla vehicles

But when I click on the desktop icon nothing happens.

I also tried running directly with: ./opt/Nikola/nikola but get this error message:

[31434:0610/180655.721386:FATAL:setuid_sandbox_host.cc(157)] The SUID sandbox helper binary was found, but is not configured correctly. Rather than run without sandboxing I'm aborting now. You need to make sure that /opt/Nikola/chrome-sandbox is owned by root and has mode 4755.
Trace/breakpoint trap

I also noticed that the files in /opt/Nikola are all owned by root.

I'm not a huge Linux expert, so perhaps someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong, or what I might need to configure.

I'm running Debian Stretch 9.9 (x86-64); Cinnamon 3.2.7; Linux kernel 4.9.0-9-amd64

Thanks.

Direct showing soc % in menubar

Would be great to see the state of charge directly in the menubar next to the car, so you are always aware of it without opening the menubar itself (on osx)

App no longer working

Is this project dead? I downloaded the app and cannot log in with my account. It looks nice, shame if it died

Unable to open window after some time

I have two issues to report. After a while of the app running I can no longer get the window to open to view my car stats. Watch the attached video.

Also, in the video: When I switch to a different desktop and click the icon to view my Tesla status the Mac will switch to desktop 1--which is where the app started. I think there's a setting somewhere that says to allow the window on all desktops.

right click menu

I don't see log out option, right click on top bar icon does nothing.

Odometer reading is inaccurate

I just installed this. Thank you for your work. I have a few suggestions after looking at your application:
1- The odometer reading is off. For me it should show over 8000 km. Instead it shows 5000.
2- The dark background of the location map makes it very hard to see.
3- The charge state is also incorrect. It seems off by 150 km.
4- Consider making the app scaleable. On a monitor that runs at 2560 x 1440 it is too small and quite hard to read.

I hope this is useful.

Temperature is showing wrong unit

First, this app looks great, well done! A welcome successor to the no-longer-maintained VisibleTesla.

The temperature is showing Celsius, but with an F:

Doesn't appear to be a way to change the units, either.

Icon to exit app

Suggest a standard "x" close button in the top-right to close app instead of having to right-click, and select from drop down.

Missing ability to switch between vehicles

For Tesla owners with more than one Tesla vehicle on their account, there is no way to select which vehicle you want to have the details for displayed. in the app you can swipe back and forth between vehicles.

Works in Catalina

Just an FYI - installed on old Mac Pro running 10.15 Catalina Beta - so far, so good :-)

show charging status

would be nice to show charging status when polled, maybe as an option. I typically charge at work and it would be nice to check in and see how it's going, or even an indication that it is at least still going at all, with a quick click on your wonderful app

Interior temperature cache is invalid/incorrect

Build Version: 0.2.9

Release Download: Nikola-Setup-0.2.9.exe

Am seeing the interior temp being displayed incorrectly once the vehicle goes to sleep. In this example, the temp is showing 32F but outside temp is 50F with the true interior temp of the vehicle being 72F.

Once I manually turn on the climate, the UI will update with the proper interior temperature. This could lead to some confusion for vehicles that haven't refreshed in a bit, displaying incorrect temperatures if Dog mode or temp control wasn't initiated properly.

Polling too often for multiple car accounts

I own two vehicles in one tesla account. I found that I'm not able to use the Tesla app or Tesla Homekit services when the Nikola app is open. It appears the Nikola app is polling at the max rate limit for one vehicle. When you have more than one, the Nikola app reports 408 errors and nothing else works.

I think the Nikola app polling should be slowed way down when running in the background. For example, it could just not poll in the background or poll once every five minutes. Then when the app is opened, speed up polling - but take into account the number of vehicles in the account so as to avoid the per account max rate limit.

Auto-update not working on Mac

On Mac Mojave 10.14.5 the auto-update of Nikola is not working right. It does tell me that there is a new update and that it wants to install a "Helper", I authorize it to do so, but it never does and keeps prompting me to update.

If I do the update manually, then it is quiet until the next update is ready.

I don't know what the reason is, but it is quite annoying...

Nevertheless: great APP!

changing the charge rate

It would be very nice (I didn't see that anywhere in other app, or mobile app) to be able to change Charge speed (changing the Charge Current) to better plan for charging end-time, etc...

Screen Shot 2019-06-08 at 06 54 06

Handling of minutes left for charging

Currently, it seems like time left for charging is displayed in fractions of hours, e.g., 1.69 hours left. It would be nice if this could be displayed in minutes, e.g., 1 hour 40 minutes left.

MacOS version will not run

I downloaded the Mac OSX version and copied it to my Applications folder. On double clicking it does nothing. I can see the app in Activity Viewer but get no visible user interface. Activity monitor shows the app and two helper processes.

OSX 10.14.5

Nikola.app 0.2.6 - June 9th 227.7MB

Can't open app from the top bar

I own 2014 Model S , logged in but app won't launch at all, clicking the icon - nothing happens. Does it work only with new M3s?

kms or Miles unit preference

It would be nice if the app was able to follow car preference for units (temp and odometer) or customizable from the app

Dynamic change of the screen realestate

Great idea, but I would like to have the view in a larger format, the current build gives me the same (small screen) as any other app.
The benefit of a big screen app, is well, a big screen :-)

Event notifications

I'd like to know when the car starts driving. But you could add a bunch of other events for notification as well. Would be awesome if it showed notifications in the OSX notifications area.

  • Starts driving
  • Starts Charging
  • Finishes Charging
  • Unlocks
  • Locks
  • Turns on AC
    etc
