You seem to be using fglrx but you have compiled GLFW to use EGL, which is not provided by fglrx. You are therefore likely using the Mesa implementation of EGL, which creates a context only known to the Mesa version of libGL. Hence glGetString returns NULL, as there's no current context in the fglrx libGL.

good catch! I couldn't get cmake to NOT use EGL until I ripped CMakeList to shreds, don't know what was going on there but regardless of all settings (from readme.md) it always wanted to use egl...
