Gonum

Installation

The core packages of the Gonum suite are written in pure Go with some assembly. Installation is done using go get.

go get -u gonum.org/v1/gonum/...

Supported Go versions

Gonum supports and tests using the gc compiler on the two most recent Go releases on Linux (386, amd64 and arm64), macOS and Windows (both on amd64).

Note that floating point behavior may differ between compiler versions and between architectures due to differences in floating point operation implementations.

Release schedule

The Gonum modules are released on a six-month release schedule, aligned with the Go releases. i.e.: when Go-1.x is released, Gonum-v0.n.0 is released around the same time. Six months after, Go-1.x+1 is released, and Gonum-v0.n+1.0 as well.

The release schedule, based on the current Go release schedule is thus:

• Gonum-v0.n.0: February
• Gonum-v0.n+1.0: August

Build tags

The Gonum packages use a variety of build tags to set non-standard build conditions. Building Gonum applications will work without knowing how to use these tags, but they can be used during testing and to control the use of assembly and CGO code.

The current list of non-internal tags is as follows:

• safe — do not use assembly or unsafe
• bounds — use bounds checks even in internal calls
• noasm — do not use assembly implementations
• tomita — use Tomita, Tanaka, Takahashi pivot choice for maximimal clique calculation, otherwise use random pivot (only in topo package)

License

Original code is licensed under the Gonum License found in the LICENSE file. Portions of the code are subject to the additional licenses found in THIRD_PARTY_LICENSES. All third party code is licensed either under a BSD or MIT license.

Code in graph/formats/dot is dual licensed Public Domain Dedication and Gonum License, and users are free to choose the license which suits their needs for this code.

The W3C test suites in graph/formats/rdf are distributed under both the W3C Test Suite License and the W3C 3-clause BSD License.

website's Issues

LICENSE: consider licensing material on website under CC license

Currently we essentially don't license any material on the website. The BSD license is not really right for prose, so the closest license is probably CC-BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/)

Are the current authors OK with that?

gonum.org does not serve go modules

I am not sure if this is the right place to post an issue, I tried to post a message to https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/gonum-dev , it failed since I am not authorized to post.

go get -u -t gonum.org/v1/gonum/...

fails, because gonum.org web site does not serve go modules anymore. All projects that depend on gonum.org fail to compile in CI environments with a root cause:

Parsing meta tags from https://gonum.org/v1/netlib?go-get=1 (status code 404)

It worked fine 2 days ago. Can you please fix the gonum.org web site?

There is a workaround in
influxdata/chronograf#5520 , but it is IMHO not a good solution.

gonum.org/v1/gonum doesn't take you anywhere useful

At the moment if I visit the import path gonum.org/v1/gonum in the browser, it doesn't go anywhere useful.

It goes to a 404 pages which suggest a few things, but none of them point me to the git repository, for example.

consider renaming new-website into website

and rename+archive website into old-website?

(once we push the big red button of the migration)

Consider licensing website content under CC license

The BSD-3-Clause is not quite right for posts and talks etc. How do people feel about licensing the content of the site under a CC license? The most similar to BSD-3 for this context by be CC-BY-SA.

Getting started section out of date

I'm new to go, thought gonum was interesting and wanted to try it. I followed the instructions on the intro website on how to get started and how to download the libraries.
The first command go get -u -t gonum.org/v1/gonum/... seemed to download something but I obtained this deprecation message:

go get: installing executables with 'go get' in module mode is deprecated.
        Use 'go install pkg@version' instead.

        or run 'go help get' or 'go help install'.

So I'm not sure if it was installed correctly. Tried a bit if I could find the correct go install command but didn't succeed. The second command to run the tests go test gonum.org/v1/... failed with go: warning: "gonum.org/v1/..." matched no packages.
