Add support for Spark (reusing Hive code)

Spark has a fork of HiveServer2 it uses to support JDBC: https://jaceklaskowski.gitbooks.io/mastering-spark-sql/content/spark-sql-thrift-server.html. And you use Hive's JDBC client to interact with it.

This means that the bulk of what we need is already done. Here are remaining TODOs afaik:

  1. Create and document an init action to start a Spark thrift server. Part of that init action will be to configure Knox to expose the Spark thrift server.

  2. Change the JDBC connector to accept jdbc:dataproc://spark and translate it into using the component gateway path for Spark.

  3. Update the README to reflect this.

Support showing HiveServer2 Operation logs (including progress bar)

You can set hive.async.log.enabled=false on hive-server2, and then pass --silent=false to Beeline to make Beeline download hive-server2 logs and display them in the console. It would be nice if our JDBC connector had the option to provide something like that too.

Update Hive Version

  • Supposed to have standalone jar for Hive 2.3.7. Compilation works fine for Hive 2.1.0, but having exceptions for Hive 2.3.7

  • Steps to Reproduce the Problem:
    Change hive/build.gradle to use Hive 2.3.7
    `Execution failed for task ':hive:relocateShadowJar'.

    java.util.zip.ZipException: zip END header not found`

Pick cluster in pool

  • Decide on how to pick a cluster within cluster pool
  • Right now just pick the first one

Possible ways

  1. by cluster load
  2. random

Dataproc JDBC Connector not working

I've attempted to utilize Dataproc JDBC Connector in its current state, but unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be functioning properly now. Given that it seems it hasn't been updated for the past four years, I suspect there may have been significant advancements in Dataproc during this time, potentially rendering the Dataproc JDBC connector incompatible with its current form. Could you please confirm if we've ceased maintenance on this project? If so, I'm curious if there are any alternative solutions available.

Optimize shaded dependency to remove WARNING messages

Expected Behavior

Add support for Presto

Presto has a JDBC connector, similar to Hive: https://prestosql.io/docs/current/installation/jdbc.html.

We can expand this repo to support jdbc:dataproc://presto/; for submitting Presto queries to a cluster or a cluster pool.

Similar to https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HIVE-24053, we would likely need to make a minor change to Presto so that we have a way of refreshing access tokens.

If Apache Knox does not already support Presto URLs, we would need to add support for that as well. Knox would just need to be a pure HTTP proxy here (no URL rewriting necessary), so it should be relatively simple if support does not already exist.
