us-govt-availability's Introduction

us-govt-availability

Calculating the availability of the US government.

As of December 20th, 2020, it stands at 99.8969%. It will take over 7 years to get to 99.90%.

  • required days: 87/(1-.9990) = 87,000
  • 87,000 - 84,390 = 2610 days or 7 years and change

Start date

Nominally, the current US Government started on March 4, 1789. However, they didn't actually vote for another month due to lack of quorum (need an exact date). Also, they dubbed their first day of business as Dec 1 of that year. (source)

Washington's start date is also an important consideration, about 2 months after Congress started.

Do we consider this the first "shutdown"?
